Одним прекрасным утром авто встало в этот режим и сообщило радостную весть «there is a problem with the transmission p lock mechanism…»
yadi.sk/i/dhcoLY8p3HpZN5
A pcon mtr это 30амперный.

When I tried to start my 2006 Prius ,it wouldn’t start and this message appears with the red triangle «there is a problem with the transmission «p» lock mechanism.Park your car on a flat surface and fully apply the parking break. «
It is at a parking lot now because I couldn’t start it!
Is it the battery?
Looks like I would need to have it towed or is there anyway I can start it and drive it to the dealership to get it checked out.HELP…HELP..HELP….!!!!!!
-
Yes… That’s a common symptom of dying battery.
To check the battery start the car without your foot on the break then hold the info button down on your MFD while turning the headlights on and off three times… This will put your screen into a diagnostic where you can check battery voltage. If it’s less than 12.3 that could be the problem.
But to be clear is the red triangle on the display screen or the dashboard light? If it’s the dashboard light you might get an auto shop to read the error code and report back…
Did you try restarting a bunch of times and push in and pull out the parking break a buncha times?

the red triangle is on » the Instrument cluster and multi-information display overview «.It is a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside it.It is NOT where the speed display . Can I replace the battery myself? OR IS THAT DANGEROUS ? but first I need to know how to test it.
what is MFD ? Yeah…I am not a guy !
First time encountered this problem. So frustrated!

I could be wrong, but it doesn’t look as though you are driving a C. You might get better, more informed responses if you post in one of the non-C areas.

We have had this problem intermittently now for 2 months. We have been to two dealers, neither of whom know how to fix this problem. The last one we even had the car towed to the dealer while the error was live on the MFD so they would be able to see it with the error happening (the last dealer had told us that they could see in the system that the error had happened, but they couldn’t diagnose it unless it was actually happening at the time). Instead of pulling it into the garage and plugging it into their computer, a tech restarted it out in the lot and drove it in. This of course, reset the system and they couldn’t track the error. They had it for two days and «were unable to replicate the issue».
What confuses me is that these dealerships seem to have NO communication system. I find it hard to believe that NO ONE has seen this problem (both dealers we went to said they had never seen it before). Surely some dealer, somewhere, has a fix for this. I’m a computer tech and I belong to listserve where I can post questions on tech issues I’m struggling with. Usually someone has seen the problem and can tell me the fix. Are these guys each operating in a vacuum? HELLO, LET’S WORK TOGETHER, PEOPLE…
We finally picked it up and drove it home. Later my wife got in it, started it up, and BINGO, it happened again. We are getting very frustrated with this. The first place we took it to did replace the 12V battery, but that did not fix the problem. Perhaps it’s the inverter coolant pump, but we’ll probably never know. All that being said, if this ever happens to you while you’re on the road, there is a workaround that can get you rolling again so you’re not stranded. I tried the fuse trick yesterday and it works perfectly: clears all the errors and you can restart the car normally.
the tech said that if you pull the top left 7.5v fuse in the lower section of the fuse box, leave it out for 30 seconds or so, then replace it (see photo), this should reset the error system and allow you to start it and get it in drive. He also said that if that doesn’t work you could try pulling the negative battery cable off for a few seconds and that should accomplish the same thing.

Was there a resolution for this? I just saw a similar error in our 2008. I pulled the fuse, but no change. When I try the lights on and off thing mentioned above….it does show the display with the batter, and the battery shows empty; however, I do not see any analog voltage value….nor do I see anything about a diagnostic display.

Chances are your 12 volt battery is getting weak, especially if it is the original battery.
Here is the way you run the test. You might have missed a step when you tried it, but if you follow the instructions it will work as long as you are working with a Gen II Prius. 2008 Prius = Gen II Prius
DO-IT-YOURSELF TEST PROCEDURE (thanks to jdenenberg):
— Without brake pedal, press the Power button once and release to enter ACC mode
— Press and hold the MFD Info button, then turn the headlights on and off three times to enter Maintenance mode; release Info button
— Press “Menu” (on screen)
— Press “Display Check”
— Press “Vehicle Signal Check” — the battery voltage is shown and should be about 12.4 to 12.8 Volts (normal for an unloaded battery)
— Again without brake pedal, press Power button and release to put a current load on the battery — the voltage should stay above 12.0V (if less than 12.0V the battery is not well, or there is a fault or unusual load somewhere)
— Press brake pedal and press Power button once to enter «Ready» mode — the battery is now charging at about 14V (if less than 13.6V or more than 14.4 there may be a problem with the charging circuit)
— Turn car OFF to leave Maintenance modeNote: it is better if you simply flash the parking lights rather than the headlights, especially if you have the HID headlights.
For reference purposes here is a graph which will help to explain the voltage in reference to the SOC (State of Charge)

Sounds like a failed combination meter. Free fix from Toyota. Do a search for «failed combination meter» for more info.
Hope this helps you and «Welcome to «Prius Chat»!
-
1. Are the headlights turned on whenever you drive? If yes, there is a dimmer knob which controls illumination of the combination meter and that should be checked.
2. If #1 is not the issue, the combination meter may have failed. Do a search for the TSB and recall notice. -
There is a brightness switch on the car that allows you to adjust the brightness of the cluster. Is that turned all the way down? If not, then you have a bad combination meter, which should be covered under warranty. -
Thanks, I just called Toyota and they will get it in next week. Ill update with the fix. Appreciate the help!
-
Ok so I went ahead and disconnected the neg side of the battery and let it sit for a few mins then reconnected it. Guess what the instrument panel turned on!! But now when I put it in drive the car thinks its in neutral and says the car will not charge if in neutral. Still the same thing? Combination meter? -

Sounds like the Prius did not go into «Ready Mode». This can happen after a battery swap or a disconnect/reconnect. Sometimes it takes two attempts of the power button to get the Prius completely booted up when the 12 volt has been disconnected.
I still think you have a bad combo meter.
Make certain the brake lights are working when you step on the brake. If they are, then firmly hold down the brake pedal and power up the Prius again.
Also, if you have ANY problems powering down the Prius, hold the power button down until all the lights go off on the dash.
-
What other problems did you experience with your car before you changed the battery? What led you to change the battery? Are you sure the battery you put in is charged up and well secured and tightened?

There is a main issue we see in regards to the Prius (Gen 2, Gen 3) and the warning message «The Transmission P lock mechanism is Abnormal» that is displayed on the HUD (Heads up Display). If you check codes, you may see P3102 Transmission Control ECU Malfunction and/or C2300 Actuator System Malfunction.
The culprit is most often a bad or low charged 12v Auxiliary battery located in the right rear on the trunk. Here are a few videos that show the different symptoms a dead or dying Aux battery will exhibit…
If you need to, you can jump start your battery at the AUX battery itself or use this method…
Now if you want to replace it, we suggest that you use an OEM Toyota Battery from your local Toyota Dealer and watch this video to get an idea as to what it takes….

The culprit is usually your Park Neutral Switch.
Replace it and all will be well again.
The Prius P lock malfunction is a common problem with Prius vehicles. P lock is a central lock option mainly seen with cars with the 12V auxiliary.
It is a safety option that does not allow your car to shift from park gear without the brake pedal pressed down.
- Causes of the Prius P lock Malfunction
- 1. Damaged wiring harness (e.g. from rodents chewing)
- How to check & fix it?
- 2. A blown fuse

- How to check & fix it?
- 1. Damaged wiring harness (e.g. from rodents chewing)
- What Else Can You Try?
- Final Thoughts
Sometimes this feature is prone to malfunction like many other electrical components in cars. There have been a lot of complaints from owners of the Prius that the P lock will malfunction and they will not be able to shift the vehicle gear away from the park.
The Prius P Lock malfunction is mainly caused by an electrical problem resulting from a damaged wiring harness, a weak auxiliary battery, or a blown fuse. Although not so often, a faulty transmission ECU can also cause this error.

This article will discuss all the possible causes and explain what you can do to troubleshoot and fix the error.
There are a lot of factors that can cause the P lock feature to malfunction. Some of the factors include the following:
1. Damaged wiring harness (e.g. from rodents chewing)
The general transmission uses a wiring harness that allows the system to communicate with the Powertrain Control Unit (PCU). Proper communication between the various parts of the transmission system, including the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and the PCM, lets the vehicle know when to shift gears and allows the driver to change from park to drive or neutral.
There is a disconnection due to damaged wiring, which could be caused by rodents chewing on the wiring. The transmission will not be able to shift from the P lock option.
How to check & fix it?
Recently, the amount of wiring harnesses in vehicles has been so many, making it difficult to diagnose and fix wiring issues. You will have to check the transmission wiring physically to analyze the problem.
Consult the manual if you do not know the wiring harness for your vehicle’s transmission. You can disconnect the gearbox, trace the wiring to the fuse box, and ensure that the wiring is not damaged.
If it is damaged, you must replace the wiring harness.
Related Toyota Malfunction: How To Deal With ICS Malfunction On Toyota
2. A blown fuse
A blown fuse can cause a Prius p malfunction. It is an integral part of the vehicle’s electrical components and prevents these components from experiencing an electrical surge.
Once the fuse gets blown, the electric current will be interrupted, causing the fuse’s electronic component to seize working or malfunction.
How to check and fix it?
If you want to fix your P lock malfunction and suspect the problem could be due to a blown fuse. You will have to diagnose to ensure the problem is from a blown fuse.
To diagnose, you will first need to consult your vehicle’s manual to locate the fuse or relay related to the transmission system. After finding the fuse or relay, ensure that it is not burnt or damaged.
If you have a blown fuse, you must replace it immediately to avoid further damage to other parts of the transmission system. Ensure you get a close enough replica of the fuse you will be returning, and confirm it is the same amp rating.
Check the fuse box to ensure that the terminals are working fine. If the terminal is damaged, you may have to replace the entire fuse box.
3. Weak auxiliary battery (12v battery)
A weak auxiliary battery may be causing the Prius p malfunction. The auxiliary is a backup battery for the principal battery.
It performs various functions in your Prius, including powering some electronic parts in the engine, radio, electronic power steering actuators, central locking and keyless entry system for unlocking the vehicle, and more.
Although many Pruis users ignore the auxiliary batteries of their vehicle, there are some problems that your vehicle may be experiencing, which may result from a failing or malfunctioning auxiliary.
The Prius uses a 12v battery, and the central lock system relies on it to get an adequate electricity supply.
How to check & fix it?
If your P lock malfunction is due to a failing 12v battery, you will have to change the battery. Like the main battery, the 12v auxiliary battery does not work forever. Manufacturers recommend that you replace the battery after six years.
To properly diagnose this problem, you may need to take your car to a professional mechanic. It is easy to detect that the auxiliary battery is terrible; one symptom is that other electronic components in the vehicle will also start failing.
4. Faulty Transmission ECU
The Engine Control Unit is one of the most important electronic components in the vehicle that controls and monitors other vital parts of the car. The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) works with the ECU by communicating with it to ensure the transmission system is working correctly.
Once the ECU stops working correctly, the transmission system will also lose its function and other significant parts of the vehicle.
How to check & fix it?
There are so many ways to check for a bad ECU. You can watch for symptoms like engine misfiring and stalling, check engine light, no ignition, engine surge, and failing electronic components.
You can use scan tools to diagnose failing ECU. You have to look for codes related to a failing ECU.
Once you are sure that the problem with your transmission is from the ECU, you can try and reset the ECU. You can also upgrade the operating system. If the problem persists, the ECU is damaged, and you should replace it.
Related Toyota Malfunction: What Does the Check Hybrid System Warning Indicate on Your Toyota?
What Else Can You Try?
There are other fast ways to temporarily fix a P lock malfunction when in a difficult situation. However, you should know this may not be a permanent fix. You can fix a Prius P lock malfunction by following these steps:
1. Disconnect your vehicle’s battery to reset the ECU, and wipe some code and warning messages from the computer. This way, the electricity is wholly drained from those components, and error codes and other computer warnings will subsequently clear.
Next, reconnect the battery back. Your gear should be able to shift to park now; if not, it could be a more severe problem, as discussed above.
2. Press the power button twice. Please ensure the key fob is in the car and do not press the brake while at it.
3. Shift the car to neutral while your foot is off the brake. Make sure you are parked on a flat surface.
4. Push the park button. It should display that you parked on the dashboard.
5. Step on the brake and firmly push the power button. It should start normally, and the warning message should clear completely.
If everything fails, your last resort is to have a tow truck come to you and get the car to a local repair shop. Alternatively, a mobile mechanic might be cheaper and could have the car up and running in no time.

Final Thoughts
When your Prius Lock Malfunctions, it is not a time to panic; you need to act fast and get a solution. To do this, you will have to identify the cause, which could be a blown fuse, a wrong wiring harness, and more. Once you find the cause, you will be able to fix your car in no time.

Toyota Prius 2004-2009 body style.
Author (jesimpki)
The Prius is an amazingly well-engineered vehicle, but like any other car, the battery can be its Achilles’ heel. Luckily, the battery isn’t actually used to start the engine like in a traditional vehicle (using a starter motor that we can hear cranking an engine to life).
Instead, the battery in a Toyota Prius is used to boot up the electronics that manage the engine and hybrid components and activate a relay to connect the high-voltage battery pack to the electrical system. (This high voltage battery pack is the one that actually starts the engine.) It can still be used to power accessory devices like cell phone chargers and the radio when the car isn’t running or in «Ready» mode.
(If you’re in a hurry, watch the short video below on how to check the voltage of your battery using the hidden service menu!)

If you have no braking issues, these indicators generally indicate that the battery is weak, and the low voltage is affecting the computers that control your ABS and VSC.

Signs of a Weak 12-Volt Battery in a Prius
- Failure to start up or no response from the power button when attempting to start.
- Dim interior and exterior lights before starting that then brighten after putting the Prius in «Ready» mode.
- Loss of radio presets when turning on your Prius.
- Slow-running coolant reservoir pump that speeds up after the Prius is in «Ready» mode.
- Failure to boot into «Ready» mode with the gear selections flashing on the odometer display.
- Error message displaying on the multi-function display (MFD) that states, «There is a problem with the transmission «p» lock mechanism. Park your car on a flat surface and fully apply the parking brake.»
Note: This is not meant to be an exhaustive list as there are other weird issues that can occur when the 12-volt battery gets low.

The Prius’ battery lives here, hidden under a panel in the rear, passenger-side corner of the hatch.

How to Test the Battery
When I became curious about the health of my Prius’ battery and wanted to get it checked out, I drove down to my trusted local AutoZone store, having had batteries in my previous vehicle tested there in years prior. When I showed the store manager what kind of vehicle I had, he blatantly stated that they weren’t allowed to touch anything on hybrid vehicles. Now, he may have misunderstood and thought I wanted him to get cozy with the high voltage battery, but I decided to forego advising him that he was suffering from ignorance and went home to look for another way to test my battery.
Luckily, Toyota left a hidden service menu in the software for all Toyota Prii. The method of access below will work on any 2004–2009 Toyota Prius. The best time to test the 12-volt battery in your Prius is after it has been sitting for several hours or overnight. This way, you can check the resting voltage of the battery. I’ve included pictures to assist you with this procedure.
Step 1: Power your Prius on by pressing the power button once.

MFD screen on. Make sure the car isn’t in «Ready» or «Accessory» mode—don’t press the brake to power into «Ready» mode.

Step 2: Press the «Display» button once.

Once the MFD has booted up, press the «Display» button (red arrow) once.

Step 3: Press the two indicated spots six times in alternating sequence.

Press these indicated spots (green arrows) six times in the order indicated on the arrows (i.e. top first, then bottom, then top, and so on).

Step 4: Press «Menu» on the top right of the screen.

Pressing «Menu» will take you to the «Diagnosis Menu».

Step 5: Select the «Display Check» option.

Press «Display Check» (red arrow).
jesimpki (Author)
Step 6: Select the «Vehicle Signal Check» option.

This will display some information about your Prius, in particular, the current battery voltage.
jesimpki (Author)
Step 7: Take note of the voltage.

The voltage of the battery is displayed in the top left of the screen (red circle). The Prius is still not in the Ready or Accessory modes.
jesimpki (Author)
Step 8: Press the «Power» button once.

Pressing the «Power» button will put your Prius in «Accessory» mode, placing a small load/drain on the battery. Again, note the voltage.

Step 9: To exit, press and hold the «Display» button.
Alternatively, you can just power off your Prius.
Determining If Your 12-Volt Battery Is Dead
Remember the two voltages we found previously? For the resting voltage, generally, anything around 12.4 volts and above is considered acceptable. For the voltage under load (when your Prius is in «Accessory» mode), anything below 12.0 volts is unacceptable, At the time of testing, when these photos were taken, I had just finished a long drive in my Prius so the battery should have been at a higher voltage than what I found above. This indicates my battery probably needs replacing soon.
You may be able to buy more time on your current battery by using a top off or float charger designed for 12-volt lead-acid batteries. This isn’t going to cure the problem since it will only get worse with time, however, with a good battery, topping off the voltage with a float charger every now and then can help extend its useful lifetime by a few years.
Where to Get a Replacement 12-Volt Battery for Your Prius
If you need a replacement battery, you have a couple of options:
- Get it replaced at your stealership, I mean, dealership.
- Purchase the OEM battery through your dealership’s service/parts department and install it yourself
- Purchase an aftermarket replacement battery, like the Optima Yellow Top version for the Prius.
Easy DIY Tasks for the Toyota Prius
Are you looking for other hands-on, do-it-yourself type things you can handle that don’t require expensive tools or taking your Prius to the dealership? Why not give a go at changing your own oil, which can be very simple! Of course, remember to reset your «maintenance required» indicator when you’re done.
