Ok, I know there are many questions about this topic, but I can’t found a convince answer (fixing the problem or not).
Recently I bought an SSD drive and installed in main SATA (hd0), I’ve replaced my cd/dvd drive with old hdd drive, using a caddy adapter.
Now I’ve installed Ubuntu on SSD and windows 10 on hdd.
The problem is on the boot, when I select windows in grub menu I’m faced with this error: cannot get C/H/S values.
I can’t set hdd boot on BIOS because it’s expected a ODD driver.
I have a Dell Inspiron 14R-5437.
Is there a workaround for this?

Same configuration here and same error got.
My workaround was booting from the HDD instead of the SSD.
In my case, I can select the booting device on every computer start-up pressing F11 (so, I just select the HDD when I want to boot Windows).
Otherwise, you might change the boot order on the BIOS setup depending on which system you want to boot up.

Have you tried this, and enter bios and set to legacy boot, and then from boot enter command line, and enter this:
test hd1
badram hd1
dump hd1
and then use
set secondary=hd1
and it might work fine this way.

Hello,
Having a dual boot PC with Windows 10 / Linux Mint 19.3 and using on that PC also a Mint 20.2 external disk, I ran into the problem of not being able to boot the external disk any more (to which I had already transferred important data from the Mint 19.3.)
During my normal startup GRUB let me chose whether I wanted to boot either Windows 10 or Linux Mint 19.3 or Linux Mint 20.2 on the external disk. This does not work any more. I can only boot either Windows 10 or Linux Mint 19.3 but n o t Linux Mint 20.2 on the external disk although it is shown on the startup GRUB screen.
Trying to apply the standard boot repair procedure did not work out. Booting from ATA (whatever that means, but recommended by the boot repair app) was not possible. I ended up with the Linux Mint recovery mode and got the error message: «hd1 cannot get C/H/S values, no such device, you have to start the kernel first».
Hoping that somebody can help me out, I would like to show the current system:

My Linux Mint 20.2 system was created big enough to satisfy my future needs and is located on sdb2.
Your assistance to solve the boot problem with my external disk system is very much appreciated.

hd1 cannot get C/H/S values.
When I tried:
grub> ls
Only hd0 appeared, but no hd1.
Even when I stick in my USB stick, grub can identify it. But it can’t identify my HDD.
And I use legacy BIOS.

sdb3 is where I would install Windows7 on
dual boot system (Gentoo primary, Win7 second) will no longer chainload the
Windows disk. I receive the following error from Grub:
hd1 cannot get C/H/S values
Below is my grub.cfg file that was working for both OSes prior to the firmware
update. (I want the firmware update because it fixed an issue with memory and
I can now use Corsair’s XMP feature to run my memory at a faster clock speed
without boosting voltage.)
I have tried using ‘nativedisk’ in my grub.cfg to no avail.
Also, on this motherboard I am using legacy, not uefi boot options. Using the
previous BIOS firmware, there always seemed to be a BIOS / Grub drive
numbering issue. I can boot the windows disk via the BIOS boot menu.

Hence the problem simply disappears if you go through to boot menu! @Vladimir: I haven’t understand your remark about the ‘biosdisk’ variable. But it seems that you think that installing grub with the ‘native’ disk module is NOT enough. Could you please be a little more explicit about what to do in addition? |

And with this, I could see the second disk as ahci1 :o)) In addition, my Ubuntu still is able to boot AND I’m also able to boot another Ubuntu from the 2nd disk. However, my problem has NOT been solved with this. This is because the main reason I tried was because I want to be able to boot my (original) windows from the 2nd disk (that used to be the primary disk before; see my first post). And the windows REFUSES to boot with the native grub driver and ‘chainloader +1’! Hence, to boot the windows on the 2nd disk, I’m still forced to use a grub from an usb stick (see my 2nd post for more details)… |

To rule out that my (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub/grub.cfg is the culprit, I renamed it /boot/grub/grub2.cfg . This way, I must use the grub command line for booting, but this is ok for a test ;o) But the problem does not go away :o( |

When I bought it, it was equipped with a (spinning) HDD and a DVD writer. However, I’ve replaced the DVD writer with a HDD bay AND moved the original HDD to it. As a new ‘primary’ disc, I bought a (modern) SSD. There is nothing wrong with this configuration — except that the BIOS is NOT prepared to cope with a second disk (the bios recognize the disk, but as ‘ODD’). The consequence is that I’m not able to boot from the second disk AS GRUB DOES NOT RECOGNIZE it as well. I always get the following error: grub error: hd1 cannot get C/H/S values (No problems to boot from hd0, though.) I guess the problem results from the BIOS that expects an ODD on the second SATA port. It really would be cool if grub was able to circumvent this problem somehow. I mean: I know it is a HDD (and not an ODD), and I could use the disk AFTER booting without any problems (with linux/ubuntu). I even could provide the missing C/H/S values, if there would be an option to do so… |
