- 3 Ways to Solve TF2 Out of Memory or Address Space Issue
By Linda | Follow |

Are you playing Team Fortress 2? Have you received error message «Out of memory or address space. Texture quality may be too high»? In this post, MiniTool Partition Wizard tells you why the error occurs and shows you how to solve the TF2 out of memory or address space issue.
TF2 Out of Memory or Address Space
Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer first-person shooter game developed and published by Valve. The game was first released for Windows and Xbox 360 platforms on October 10, 2007 in an orange box three-in-one manner. But later on April 9, 2008, it was released as a standalone version on Windows.
Since the release, TF2 has received many praises and awards for its art direction, gameplay, humor, and use of character in a multiplayer-only game.
TF2 is an excellent game but it also has some problems, for example, some people complain about «TF2 out of memory or address space» issue in forums.
Hello, I’ve been playing tf2 for a very long time and I’ve never had a problem with the game, except now. It says «Out of memory or address space. Texture quality may be too high»… —www.reddit.com
However, many people wonder why this problem will happen, because the RAM of their PCs is no less than 8GB, while the TF2 recommended RAM is 1GB. Then, what causes issue «TF2 out of memory or address space» and how to solve this problem? Just keep reading.
How to Solve the Problem
The issue «TF2 out of memory or address space» is related to memory, but it is not caused by the shortage of RAM. Steam and most Valve games are all 32-bit apps and they will have use limit of RAM.
TF2 seems to have an internal limit at around 2 GB of RAM (just like Skyrim, which has the limit of 3.1GB RAM usage), and will balk if it goes above that. Even though you’re running 64-bit systems, 32-bit processes are still limited to around 2 to 3 GB of RAM.
Therefore, to solve the problem, you must reduce the RAM that TF2 is using. You can try the following methods:
Fix 1. Change Game Settings
Through turning off game overlay & html mods, enabling multicore rendering, and turning down model & texture & shaders & shadow, you can relieve this issue greatly. Here is the guide:
- Go to main Steam page > steam top left > IN game> uncheck enable Steam overlay. This may require Steam restart.
- Go to main Tf2 menu> bottom right > advanced options > under performance > uncheck enable html mods.
- Go to options>video>advanced> enable mutlicore rendering> turn model to medium, texture detail to medium> shader to low>shadow to medium> click okay> click apply.
Fix 2. Clear Cache
Many users report that deleting sound cache may solve the issue «TF2 out of memory or address space». Here is the guide:
- Close TF2.
- Go to tf/sound/.
- Delete cache.
- Start TF2 and see if you no longer crash.
In addition to this method, a user named Dummkopf shares a way to clear cache regularly. Click this link to his guide. You can also try his method.
Fix 3. Reduce Mods Usage or Wait for Fix Released by Valve
If the above methods don’t work for you, you should consider reducing the use of MODs (if you use mods), because mods will also eat RAM. Some people think that the «TF2 out of memory or address space» is caused by memory leak. In this case, the next update may repair this issue.

Hey guys. So this, being the error in the thread title, started happening to me and my friends recently. This is a client issue and crashes the client. before anyone says anything, I can guarantee you that our computers can safely run TF2 on the best graphics offered. I am led to believe that the cause of this problem lies with the server. None of us have ever experienced this problem before and it only happens on my server. There doesn’t seem to be one singular event in-game that causes this error to happen. I believe that it might be caused by a memory leak or something similar that something in the TF2 server is causing, however, my TS3 server is not affected.
I have these plugins installed:
Code:

If there is anything else anyone would like to know to try and diagnose the issue, just ask and I will get the info. Thanks!
I’m receiving this error randomly while playing TF2. The game crashes.
«Out of memory or address space. Texture quality setting may be too high.»
I don’t think this is acceptable. I have a 64bit Core i7 system with 16GB of RAM. That should be far more than enough RAM for a game which debuted October 9th, 2007.
Valve lists the following specs (SteamOS + Linux) on their TF2 store page:
MINIMUM:
OS: Ubuntu 12.04
Processor: Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600/9600GT, ATI/AMD Radeon HD2600/3600 (Graphic Drivers: nVidia 310, AMD 12.11), OpenGL 2.1
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 15 GB available space
Sound Card: OpenAL Compatible Sound Card
Additional Notes: Mouse, Keyboard
1GB OF RAM…Why is this an issue. The user should not be made to think they must reduce their texture quality settings. Someone, Valve/xorg/intel, should fix their memory leaks.

This has happened a few past years with my tf2 Halloween updates. Usually this is just a matter of playing with your video settings.
The fix that worked for me was turning off game overlay via from the main steam settings(might require a steam restart). & enabling multicore rendering from advanced video settings. From the advanced menu I also turned off html mods. Turning down model & texture & shaders & shadow in settings to medium or low.
Steam overlay can be found from main steam page > steam top left > IN game> uncheck enable steam overlay. (may require steam restart)
Main Tf2 menu> bottom right > advanced options > under performance > uncheck enable html mods.
Options>video>advanced> enable mutlicore rendering> turn model to medium, texture detail to medium> shader to low>shadow to medium> Click Okay> Click apply!
Still testing guys but hopefully you can get this running. Apparently models & texture will effect this.
Hope this helps :D.
Additional fixes. Edit also close your browser background applications!
properties of team fortress 2 -> set launch options -> type -dxlevel 81
but u have to delete it for the next time u start TF2
Setting everything to low with these fixes.
«sadly it does mean… Super bad graphics, model quality and textures nightmare worthy… «
Crash seems to be related to 32 bit systems.

[TF2] Engine error: You are out of memory!
Hello, NFOservers forums! Support recommended that I post about my problem in the site’s forums.
After one of the recent Team Fortress 2 updates my server has been randomly crashing with the error Engine error: You are out of memory! This error appears in both the console from my control panel and in the regular game logs located in /tf/logs/. The crash seems like it relates to SourceMod since I don’t recall it ever crashing when I completely disabled all the addons. After this I decided to update SourceMod today (I was 35 builds behind). I thought it worked since the server didn’t crash for quite a while. But, unfortunately, it crashed once more.
It is very hard for me to find what is causing it since there are no SourceMod logs that show an error that happen around the time of the crash. If it is a plugin problem then I certainly don’t know what is causing it.
Here is a list of all my plugins on the server in PasteBin
If anyone knows what is causing this or has any info then I would very much appreciate it. I will post more info if it is needed!
Thanks!

What does your console.log file say? That can provide some better logging information to pinpoint problems.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn’t matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can’t take it back now! It’s out there!

You can enable it on your «Server Control» tab(-condebug on the command line enables it).
After you enable it and restart the server, the file is in your tf folder.

I have now enabled condebug and will check the file when the server crashes again.
And my server runs on a friend’s VDS. I would ask him for help since he runs many servers but he is currently offline.

Are you sure the VDS isn’t running out of memory? Do you have access to the «Server Health» tab? If so, how much ram is free?

The VDS currently has a little over 1GB of memory free and seems to stay there.

If you’re using Windows it’s possible Windows is performing some updates in the background that is consuming resources. I have noticed on my dedis that ram usage can go up 3-4GB for a little bit, then go back down. If this is the case, the issue is temporary and should only happen a few times.
Next time the server crashes with this error, ask the owner of the VPS to check the resource usage graphs to see if memory usage went up(and free memory was at or near 0).

It is a Windows server but I’m not sure it would be because of updates since it has been happening for a few days now. On the other hand, I don’t know much about VDS servers so I could be completely wrong.

You can try changing the virtual memory but most likely you will need to add more ram to it. Goto control panel, system and security, system, advanced system settings, performance, settings, advanced, change, custom size 20000mb should make is 20Gb virtual memory, set ok , apply ,ok and it will most likely ask you to reboot after that.

He is using managed. Even if he wasn’t, virtual memory is very slow and will ruin game server performance.

Yeah, those sounds are used in ba_mlcastle. The pb_ prefix is used for any custom stuff related to the map itself.
What @Slippery Nipple said above is the correct fix, so i’ll tl;dr it for the lazy to find the answer:
Go to your customTeam Fortress 2tf folder and then delete every single [anything]sound.cache files,
then go to the sound folder and delete the sound.cache file
. (re)start TF2 and try out the sounds. Don’t worry about the files, they’ll come back.
These sort of problems tend to happen with custom sounds every some now and then, but atleast the fix is easy enough.

I can’t get TF2 to run. It loads up until the map loads, then crashes and gives me the CMDLCache out of memory error. I find that hard to believe as I have 6GB of DDR3 and 4GB of VRAM. I used to get the meshDX8 error, but that stopped since I reinstalled DX9. I have updated to 9.5 drivers as well with no help.

Have you tried increasing your heap size?
use this code
Code:
Code:
-heapsize (# goes here in kbs)
ex. -heapsize 512288 (for 512mb RAM)
You need to add this in you shortcut for TF2.
You right click on your shortcut on your desktop & go to properties. Then add the heap code after all of the text in your target box.
Or you can right click on TF2 in steam and add the heap code by right clicking, going to properties, and then clicking «set launch options»

I assume you’ve tried verifying the files and maybe even redownloading the game?

It’s a known error, saw some posts about it earlier. Try changing the size of your page file or disabling/enabling multi-core support in your options.

Ok guys, thanks for the responses. None of those are the correct solutions though
I found this out googling through dozens of other forums. Basically Vista and 4GB of VRAM don’t play nicely.
Here’s the article that helped: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105
I got the Load lump 53 error, the CMDLCache Out of memory error and the CMeshDX8 error. I believe I actually had two problems, a bad install of DX9 and the video RAM issue. Anywho, that Microsoft patch and reinstalling DX9 and drivers helped. I can play at full resolution with only a little micro stutter
For the record, I have no page file atm, and multi-core enabled. All settings maxed at 2560×1600. This card is great

Yeah I thought of that too, but didn’t post it
Good that you posted the solution though.

I hope it helps someone else googling for an answer! I spent two days trying to figure out what was wrong!

Sry to bring up such an old old post, but I have now ran into this issue… except one thing is different. I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate! Every solution to this problem has been for windows vista and the way it handles it’s memory allocation. But when I tried to install that hotfix it said it wasn’t needed. So I have been googling for the past hour or so now and didn’t find anything. So I came here to see if anyone else had found out something different about this and windows 7.
I’m getting the: Can’t load lump 53, allocation of (insert random number) bytes failed! Engine Error
Makes me sad, it only happens when I load maps, but it’s like… EVERYTIME I load a map.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tf2 is crashing every one or two hours and giving me a «low memory error»
I have about 40% ram usage whenever this happens tho
Only programs running are tf2 / steam / spotify / shadowplay

Have you looked at this thread?

A common solution seems to be to turn down graphical settings though I’m assuming you have some sort of config

I get this error when I lawena frags. Normally get it more often when i run dx 90 and up (in lawena). Happens less when I’m under dx 90 but still happens nonetheless. Maybe try running dx 80 and it will probably happen less but it for sure won’t fix the problem. Hope this helps to some degree.

I don’t think messing up with the registry is a good idea try to delete some mods on your custom folder
Or delete the sound.cache in steamapps/commen/team fortress2/tf/sound

Try deleting everything in your downloads folder besides custom maps. It seemed to help with this specific crash for me (although the game still crashes occasionally with no error, because tf2.)
