Describe the bug
When the setting public.app.skipCheck in /usr/share/meteor/bundle/programs/server/assets/app/config/settings.yml is set to true, a first-time user will get a «Failure on call (reason=ICE error) (error 1004)» error after allowing their browser to share the microphone.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Make sure that the BigBlueButton server HTML5 client settings (/usr/share/meteor/bundle/programs/server/assets/app/config/settings.yml) has public.app.skipCheck set to true (this instructs the HTML5 client to skip the Echo Test)
  2. Join a meeting from a browser that has not been allowed to share the microphone with it
  3. Choose to join with microphone
  4. Allow the browser to use your microphone
  5. See error

Expected behavior
Audio conference should be joined without problems

Actual behavior
A «Failure on call (reason=ICE error) (error 1004)» error is presented to the user, the audio joining method window stays active, but pushing neither «Microphone» or «Listen only» works. Closing the «How would you like to join» window and restarting the audio join process works without a problem.

I am getting this error «Failure on call (reason = ICE error) (error 1004)» on android smartphone in google chrome.
Firefox work normaly.
The problem also occurs on demo.bigbluebutton.org and test.bigbluebutton.org

I am testing 2.2 and 2.3 version. In my subdomain conf 2.2.
I see only black area in Webcam zone. Another team don’t see my connection.
when I connect to the problematic device, I see a black square at the place of the video, I hear the rest of the conference participants, but they do not see me or hear me.
this problem has appeared in the last 2 months

Thanks. It seems you are hitting a bug related to Chrome/Samsung browsers (not all, but specific devices) where the browser hangs at the beginning of media connection (for audio/video/screenshare).

My wife has just tested with her Samsung Galaxy S9+ (Android 10, browser: Samsung Internet 14.2.3.14) against our platform (BBB 2.4-beta3) and did not encounter any problem. We both tested with WIFI active (which does not mean that the WebRTC traffic necessarily uses WIFI only as long as mobile data is available, too!) and with LTE (WIFI having disabled). I did in parallel the same tests with my Huawei P20 Pro and the above-mentioned version of the Chrome browser. Also no problems. Bi-directional audio and camera worked fine for both devices under both WIFI settings.

Interestingly, our BBB platform is speaking IPv4 only (on purpose, as we ran into problems with IPv6 when it came to IPv6 Privacy Extensions). Could they’ve been playing a role in the problem @amortis encountered?

The same error on samsung A31 and chrome browsers.

To the developers: sounds like I have the same issue on the same device and browser for another online meeting application (not bbb). I can’t confirm if the error is the same, but the voice connecting issue is in place.

Я использую BigBlueButton с canvas. Я установил его с помощью скрипта, предоставленного на их странице Github, а именно:

Проблема возникает всякий раз, когда я создаю конференцию и присоединяюсь к ней. Я не мог использовать звук, ни слушая.

При нажатии на кнопку присоединиться с микрофоном появляется сообщение об ошибке со словами:

 Failure on call (reason=ICE error) (error 1004)

И когда я нажимаю только на Прослушивание, ничего не происходит.

Я просмотрел журналы, но ничего полезного, я подозревал некоторые звуковые ошибки из-за конфигурации хоста, но я не могу прояснить ситуацию. Может быть, у кого-нибудь из вас возникнет идея о том, с какими журналами следует ознакомиться.

Я подозреваю, что это проблема, связанная с FreeSWITCH, я следил за настройкой здесь о настройке FreeSWITCH с брандмауэром (хотя я не использую брандмауэр, но BBB config указывает, что он рассматривает брандмауэр), но ничего не изменилось.

Любое предложение будет оценено.

Ты спас мне жизнь. Файл, о котором говорит Юнес, взят из Canvas LMS. Если вы следовали официальным инструкциям по установке, этот файл должен быть /var/canvas/app/models/big_blue_button_conference.rb включен. Вам нужно будет перезапустить приложение (или, если вы не знаете как, сервер), чтобы изменения вступили в силу.

Hello everyone! Got such error while connecting to my bbb server 
WebRTC: 1004

INCOMPATIBLE_SDP ‘Incompatible SDP’ 488,606

Have no even idea how ti fix that.

Connecting to demo.bigbluebutton.org gives me the same error =( 

Any ideas how can i fix it?

Can you try it with both FireFox and Chrome and let us know if you get the same error.

Also, confirm you have a working microphone with your computer.

Are you on a laptop?  Is it possible for you to connect via a wireless hotspot (and thereby have a completely different network path) and try https://demo.bigbluebutton.org/ again?

Also, what version of the browsers are you testing?

Do you have a microphone on your desktop?  That would cause a 1004 on our server.

i m facing the same problem, my bbb server 2.o is set up behind a firewall and both the clients inside my network and outside my network have an error 1004 incompatible SDP. you can test my server on https://visio.mre.gov.dz need your help please!!!

Having the same problem. I didn’t have this problem with 1.0 but when I updated to 1.1 I started to get this problem with Chrome. Firefox works as usual.

I tried your demo (2.0) and I get the same error.

Hi Niels,

Chrome requires that the browser be connected to the server via SSL before it will allow the user to share their microphone.  FireFox is less restrictive.

When you try sharing microphone with https://demo.bigbluebutton.org/, does Chrome give you any warning next to the URL or does it show «Secure»?

Having the same problem. I didn’t have this problem with 1.0 but when I updated to 1.1 I started to get this problem with Chrome. Firefox works as usual.

I tried your demo (2.0) and I get the same error.

What’s the full error that you’re getting? The 1004 code is generic and the actual cause will tell more.

A getUserMedia failure should show up way before a the call tries to connect and you would get an 1004 «Incompatible SDP» error. That getUserMedia error looks like when you try to get a mic with Chrome on HTTP. Are you getting different errors on our demo server vs. your own server?

From home both demo (2.0) and our server (1.1) give an error message. From work only our server (1.1) gives an error message. A friend tested and got no error messages… Very strange…

hello everybody!!!, i’m back!!! i’ve solved the same problem by authorizing all udp ports for my server. the result is the webrtc works for the outside clients, but for the inside clients i got the 1010 error timeout…., any ideas for the causes?!! thanks!!!

The «inside clients» are behind a firewall.  The ICE communication has timed out, which might be a result of the firewall. Do you have any visibility to the Firewall logs (or a friend in IT if your within the company) that could help diagnose why ICE candidate negotiation is timing out?

Thanks for your help, i appreciate!! yes, i authorized this ports for the outside on my firewal and it works perfectly, but inside my networks, i have vlans(users vlan and the DMZ who contains my server) and i set up a rule witch forward any ports to my bbb server and and the same thing on a reverse path (bbb server-> vlan user) but still get the same error.

Can users on the inside access the public IP address or do you have a custom DNS entry for your inside users that resolves to a different internal IP so they can connect.

hy Chad, yes my users have their own DNS witch resolve the internal ip adress for my server. they haven’t access to the public ip adress.

We recommend setting up the internal DNS so it resolves to the external IP address of the server.  This way, your BigBlueButton server can accept connections from a single incoming IP address.

thanks guys for your help, i all ready think to that solution and i tried it to resolve my public Ip server to my inside clients, but my dns knowleges are limited and it didn’t work for me, but i think that it’s THE solution for me!!!!. thanks!!!!

It’s definitely the reason that the people inside can’t use WebRTC. The FreeSWITCH setup that we use only returns one IP address for the browser to use to connect to and that IP address is going to be the public one. Your inside users are trying to connect to that and are getting stuck.

hello every one,

I fixed my 1004 issues by setting up a HaiPinNAT rule on my firewall to let my inside clients to access to the public IP of my BBB server and authorized the needed udp ports for both my inside clients and my server, and everything is work perfectely!!! BBB rocks!!!!!!
