Do not use an official Apple usb c cable and it will work. This has been said so many times at this point.

Same here! Error -31 every time. Tried several aftermarket cables. My Mac is a 2010 with usb 2.0 ports. Do I need to get a usb 3.0 hub?
No luck on my end either, trying it with my old 5S on 12.3. Used official Apple Lightning cable, a MFi-certified from Amazon Basics, directly plugged into my Mac mini 2018 (latest stable Catalina. build) or via a hub. Always -31.
E: Actually never mind, it worked using CLI by putting the phone into DFU mode directly.

Update: after upgrading to iOS 13.2.3, and running checkr4in from CLI, jailbreak succeeded! The problem is that I got my device frozen afterwards… Rebooted, and now I am facing error -31 again

I have been trying to jailbreak my Ipad pro 10.5 wifi from last last few weeks when it officially get supported by Checkra1n but did not succeed.
Initially I tried rainStorm and then this tutorial on youtube, i thought the problem is with setting up mac os on linux itself but at the end I found it was not the case.
Let’s not waste the time here and get back to steps/ process to fix this error -31.
If you are starting from fresh and does not have mac OS environment setup (for Windows/Linux user) then try this:

Once Mac Os is Setup :

Boot into mac OS

Download latest checknra1n from their official website

Open terminal

and type the command /Applications/checkra1n.app/Contents/MacOS/checkra1n

and hit enter

if you are getting any error running the command simply type /Applications/checkra1n.app/Contents/MacOS/ and then letter ‘c’ and click on tab so that it finds the appropriate file which should be «checkrain+something»

once you enter the command you should see message «Waiting for device to put in DFU mode» something like that in terminal

Keep the terminal as it is and open checkra1n app which you just downloaded and start the process

start the process to boot into recovery mode and then DFU mode

At the same time you may see error -31 on terminal (Do not close the terminal)

Once the device is in DFU mode , you may see you device screen with some logs message , Yes you device got jailbroken .

Your checkra1n GUI app may still throw some error though but you can confirm the jailbreak status from the terminal itself.

In that case, keep the terminal open and try to put the device in DFU mode using checkra1n GUI app. It will successfully jailbreak the device
Here’s a possible fix for Checkra1n “Checking if device is ready” error 31 while jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad on iOS 13 jailbreak.
Now that Checkra1n is ready to go, you’re probably trying to jailbreak your iPhones and iPads.
We’ve seen plenty of people trying to do exactly that with some taking to social media to note that they’re having problems, namely, an error that says “Checking if device is ready” with nothing happening. One user summed it up perfectly.

If you’re using an older iPhone, the chances are that’s already what you’re using and so far, we haven’t had too many problems with that configuration. But when we’ve found the issue rears its head, we’ve also found a USB-C cable.
We recommend using following cables or dongles for using checkra1n jailbreak:
- Apple Lightning to USB Cable (1 m): $15
- Anker USB C Hub with USB-A 3.0: $23
