Got a one month old fully patched virtual Server 2008R2+Exchange 2010 SP3ru4 install (with 8 VCPUs and 32GB) on a server 2012 HyperV host system. It was migrated from Exchange 2003, everything is running well and backups are working fine.
Last week I got the dreaded Exchange ESE Event ID 474 Database Page Cache event on my MailBox Database (The read operation will fail with error -1018) at 1:32 AM Feb 1.
I followed the steps in KB314917 and took the database offline and used eseutil to run some readonly checks. My original ESE error was «Information Store (8996) Mailbox Database 2013122812: The database page read from the file «G:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange
ServerV14MailboxMailbox Database 2013122812Mailbox Database 2013122812.edb» at offset 4978507776 (0x0000000128be0000) (database page 151931 (0x2517B)) for 32768 (0x00008000) bytes failed verification due to a page checksum mismatch. The expected
checksum was [2d3ed2c1ba3c60c3:3edac1250af8e68a:6c9e6c9e11033ced:770988f676e6ddd5] and the actual checksum was [2d26d2d94790c331:3edac1250af8e68a:57165716d727a497:770988f676e6ddd5]. The read operation will fail with error -1018 (0xfffffc06). If
this condition persists then please restore the database from a previous backup. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.».
This indicates the issue was with page 151931 so I did a eseutil /M «Mailbox Database 2013122812.edb» /p151931 and dumped that page but it came back correct — all checksums were ok. Finally I checked the entire database with a eseutil
/K «Mailbox Database 2013122812.edb» and a
eseutil /G «Mailbox Database 2013122812.edb» and the whole thing came back clean in both cases which implies this is not a real error. I’ve had two more ESE 474 errors since then and both time the bad pages came back clean — no issues
in the database (the exchange server and my backups continue to work fine).
It appears this is a bogus/false error, any ideas why? As I’m under HyperV I’m not sure who to contact as my «hardware vendor» — the database
resides on a fixed hyperV VHDX disk on a LSI SAS RAID6 array which reports no errors and we had no power glitches, new updates, or anything that can explain it. I had
a look through event logs on the hyperV host as well and saw nothing of interest.
I am running ESET antivirus for exchange but it has exclusions for the database but I turned off the realtime component after the 2nd error and still got the 3rd error so it’s not that.
Looking through the logs around the time of the initial problem the only thing out of the ordinary is the system had cleaned up 10 deleted mailboxes the night before (which was not unexpected) and there were a bunch of 9863 events «An invalid event history
watermark has been detected by background cleanup. The watermark will be deleted.» in the logs around the time of the cleanup (which should be harmless?).
Not sure what to do next. Ideas?
Thanks.

The computer has a HD that is in RAID 0 with a flash cache.
The drive is 750 GB and the flash cache is 32 GB.
A chkdsk /r had been run on the drive. After logon the computer crashed and was unbootable.
A reset with save files had failed. There is a log file.
There were multiple automatic repairs and somehow the last automatic repair fixed failure to boot.
The plan is to make a backup image using third party software then clean install Windows 10 1803.
The third party software requires the VSS problems to be fixed before a backup image is made.

This all started Wednesday-Thursday last week. I have a Windows 7 workstation that started having problems with Internet Explorer. It would crash displaying an error with mshtml.dll and restart several times before settling down. Also, it could not install Windows Updates and would give an error. Also the user could not search inside of Outlook 2007.
While troubleshooting, I discovered the Application log was full of ESENT 474 errors messages. They all said essentially «the database page read from file <see below> failed verification» The affected files were:
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDataStoreDataStore.edb
C:Users(username)AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsWebCacheWebCacheV01.dat C:Windowssystem32CatRoot2{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}catdb
C:ProgramDataMicrosoftSearchDataApplicationsWindowswindows.edb
Research showed these files were all safe to delete because Windows would rebuild them. So I did. Had to reboot and/or go into Safe Mode to get rid of some of them, but they were deleted. After reboot the errors immediately returned. These are all Jet databases, so I tried to see if there was a way to maybe reinstall that engine, but didn’t find much on it. I made sure all the drivers and firmware were up to date just in case that was the issue but it didn’t solve anything. Also ran sfc and it came back clean.
At this point, I figured Windows was corrupted, so I tried to do a repair install. It got past the first reboot, got to the last step were it migrates settings and data and got stuck there. It stayed that way overnight. So, with little other choice, I powered the PC off and rebooted it. It got stuck in a repair loop and wouldn’t continue.
This machine came preinstalled with Windows on a SATA drive. I had been meaning to install an SSD drive in it, so I took the opportunity now to do so. After this machine was purcased, I had creased an image in FOG and successfully deployed it to 20+ workstations. So, I decided to deploy this image onto the SSD. No issues. After the images is loaded the PC gets joined to the domain automagically. As soon as I logged in and tryed to get Updates… same issue. I thought maybe somethign from the Domain and WSUS server might be the culprit so I renamed the PC, removed it from the domain and told it to fetch Updates from Microsoft. I started that at around noon on Friday. When we left for the day it was still checking for updates. Came in this morning… still checking for updates. Rebooted — all the files are corrupted again. NO antivirus has been deployed on the workstation yet, so that shouldn’t do it.
I’m totally stumped. Any ideas?

Windows 10 ESENT 474 event corrupted local datafiles WebCache, Catalog, etc .. + strange…
Hi,
I’ve been searching desperatly for a solution or at least to locate the issue, because recently I built up a new PC :
- Motherboard Asus ROG Strix z390-e Gaming
- CPU Intel Core CoffeeLake 9700k
- GPU Asus NVIDIA RTX2070 SUPER
- 2×8 Go Corsair RGB RAM 3200MHz
- 2x 1 To Samsung 970Evo Plus M.2 SSD
I installed with the Windows image tool creation from by previous PC, a Windows 10 Professional. Have a paid and valid license, activated it.
And after like few days of use without any problem, it began. The curse came in.
I started to have apps randomly crashing, some queries over HTTPS TLS failing Firefox says : SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_READ, Edge works better, but I still have issues on some websites, … In the Windows Events Viewer I can see a lot of error ESENT types, picking you some examples :
— ESENT event 474 : WebCacheV01.dat : READ failed, checksum issue.
— ESENT event 474 : UnistoreDBstore.vol : Same, READ failed, checksum issue.
— ESENT event 474 : DataStore.edb : same
It leads to other ESENT errors because process fail after trying to read the db/file. A wild guess here, is it have something to do with checksums calculations being wrong because of my issue even local certificate signature cheking for reading in these databases probably failing ?
NOW, here is the long list of what I tried :
— Reinstall a fresh Windows 10 from the Recover tool in Windows 10 : Nothing changes
— Updated all my drivers from the official Motherboard ASUS website
— Updated BIOS and checked time sync : OS and BIOS time OK.
— Tried various SCAN Tools Rootkit tool, RAM/HDD/CPU/ checker MemTest, CHKDSK, Gmer, CCleaner, HDScan, … : Appears to have no problem : wow
— Tried ANOTHER connection, sharing my 4G mobile internet via USB : still have the issues. So issue in local.
— Tried to BOOT on Linux Mint or Ubuntu USB key live : each time I have a RIP error or Segmentation Fault, I can’t boot up on Linux. Strange as well, have to dig more here.
— Tried to enable/disable different TLS/SSL versions in Internet Options
— Tried to check for bad certificates in my local certificate store : all seems to be pretty by default.
— Wanted to disabled EMS or change Cipher priority order for Windows, : on this one I’m not sure I did the things right, I ‘ve seen no change.
— Tried to run DISM and SFC Windows integrity repair Tools, these detected Nothing wrong and completed to 100%
— Tried to disable Windows Defender/Firewall
— Tried to stop one by one, stoppable Services, to see if one was tampering my TLS/SSL encryption operation.
— I’m sure I did try other things, but I’m tired and I will add these when I remember.
now I found a subject of a fellow, who apparently have the same symptoms :
The post ends with no solution, but a lot of search, and I could test some things based on that. Like DannyRCDW said, I’m also willing to pay a Bounty at this point. It’s totally insane.
Please, if you read me, have you any idea of what’s could going on here ? I’m out of idea.
Thanks,
Alex

My PC keeps freezing for ~1 min and I keep getting Event 533, 510, 508(ESENT) and 129(iaStorA)
Alright, i did some more tests.
Disabling Google Drive didn’t solve the issue.
Clean installed Windows 10 twice diretly to Anniversary Update.
The first time, i have installed all my softwares. Issue persisted.
The second time, i have installed only the basics and blocked further updates from Octomber 10 (becouse i didn’t notice this issue on that date). Issue persisted.
Most of the time its about an SO read/write delay in these files:

Sometimes this file also appears in the logs:
%userprofile%AppDataLocalCommsUnistoreDBstore.vol
Its too much coincidence to be a faulty SSD. My last attempt will be replacing it with my old one.
After some digging on the internet, i couldn’t find much about it. Whats going on? Its just me and the OP?
