Maximus viii hero error code 55
As the title says i assembled my new system yesterday and i’m getting this 55 code.
My system:
Maximus viii hero
I5-6600k
Gskill trident z 3200(F4-3200C16D-8GTZB)
Corsair hx 750w gold
2x radeon 7870 tahiti cf
Ek supremacy evo waterblock(My memory kit is not in asus qvl list but in g skill site viii hero is in the qvl list)
So i know this 55 code is memory not installed but i’ve read others have the same kit working on this motherboard.
I tried all the troubleshooting stuff like 1 dimm installed in all the slots, updated to 1001 bios successfully i guess, reseated cpu..
So my since i don’t have other ddr4 kit to try what i need to do.rma motherboard, ram, both,or get a cheap ddr4 dimm and try entering bios and applying the stuff raja@asus said on other topics about this error.Thank you guys waiting for some help.

When you reseated your CPU, did you examine the CPU socket for any bent or missing pins?

Yea wish that was the case but that’s a new system and never managed to get into bios..I will rma the motherboard and hope that will fix things..I even reassembled the waterblock in case there was too tight on the motherboard and still the same.On the front it has plastic washers and on the back there is a soft plastic between the backplatecand the motherboard..

Unfortunately DDR4 3200 is not plug and play. It requires manual tweaking sometimes.

Perhaps it would be wise to test your motherboard with the bare minimum out of the case before sending it back. Use the cardboard box as a testbench.

Thank you for assisting me with my issue chino.I did test the motherboard as you said and still the same.I got in contact with the shop i purchased the motherboard and told me asus is slow in the rma and it will take 1 and a half months to get my mobo back..lol..So i decided to purchase another ddr4 kit from the qvl in order to be sure if its the mobo thats defective..Also the asus rep that i’m talking through emails told me to try a memory kit from the qvl list..I’ll keep you updated.

Keep me updated.
Also it would be wise if you can borrow a PSU, CPU or another motherboard from a friend to test your components. Or bring your system to a PC repair store and have them test it for you. The 55 QCODE means that the motherboard isn’t picking up any memory modules. It can be anything from a defective module, motherboard or CPU.
As a sidenote. Did you populate the 8 pin power header on your motherboard?

Yea already tested my backup psu that i use when leak testing.About the 8 pin power header,of course..Problem is none of my buddies got a z170 build so i can’t troubleshoot..If i had parts to borrow i would know by now which part is defective..By the way as i was packaging the mobo yesterday i noticed on the back of the mobo 2 or 3 places that are shiny like glue or something and what made me think its totally the motherboard, the surface on the back of b1 or b2 ram module is a bit greyish or some acid corroded it?On the matt black pcb and the pins from b1 or b2.I’ll take a photo of it later when i get home and upload it.

Error Q-Code 55 (bad memory) with Maximus VIII Hero + i5 6600
-
Thread starterDJFuji
-
Start dateJan 12, 2016

Putting together a new build and so far it’s been REALLY frustrating, especially since I don’t have other hardware I can use to troubleshoot individual components.
Here’s what I’m running so far:
Asus Maximus VIII Hero
i5 6600 Skylake
32gb (16×2) Corsair Vengeance LPX (CMK32GX4M2A2666C16)
Corsair H80i GT Liquid Cooler
I’m assembling the motherboard with only CPU, cooler, power, and RAM, and I keep getting the «error code 55» which indicates some problem with the memory. I’ve already tried:
1. Trying only one stick
2. Trying the other stick
3. Trying each of the 4 slots individually (single channel)
4. Reseating the CPU
5. Loosening the CPU cooler screws
6. Changing out the motherboard
At this point i’m thinking it has to be either bad CPU or bad RAM. I changed out mobo first because what are the chances that BOTH DIMMs are bad at the same time? That particular model wasnt on ASUS’s QVL list, but I called them and their tech support said it should be fine.
I would prefer not to buy another CPU and another set of DIMMs just to isolate the issue, but it’s rapidly coming down to that. Anyone have any guidance or advice on what to try next?
And will amazon even take back opened CPUs?

I don’t understand why people don’t consult the QVL before buying memory..
What happens if you push the reset button after it gives the error? Does it POST?
The mobo has a MemOk button on it. Try installing the ram in the A2/B2 slots and power up. Hold the button for a few seconds till it reboots. It resets ram at lowest settings for compatibility.

Yeah i couldnt find any of their QVL models on amazon in 2×16 format, and their tech support said it should be fine. Of course, ASUS isnt known for their tech support prowess, but yeah.
System does NOT post. No screen-on, no beep, nothing. It just returns the 55 error code.
Yeah, i tried the memok button too. Nothing. Tried single and dual channel mode in every possible combination.
At this point I’m thinking that it’s either CPU bad (ASUS techs thought this was unlikely), bad memory (which i think is unlikely for BOTH sticks to be bad), or my new hypothesis, which is that these sticks are brand new and just arent compatible with this mobo (possibly due to old BIOS.)
I’m going to flash the BIOS to latest using the hardware USB BIOS updater and then try again. If that doesn’t work, i’ll bite the bullet and grab some G.SKill on QVL list.

Because it’s a home computer and 99 times out of a 100 you’re fine either way?
I mean literally in 16 years of building computers I’ve only had an issue with correctly spec’d memory like 3 times out of probably a thousand builds/upgrades. Make sure it’s the right type, speed, and voltage and odds are good that you will be fine. Desktop computers aren’t that picky on memory. That combined with the manufacturers doing a shit job of updating the QVL means there’s not much incentive to check it.
That said, his combo IS on Corsair’s tested list.

Interesting, good find, XavierMace. I didnt think to check corsair’s list. Yeah I tried flashing BIOS through USB and getting the exact same result.
Completely out of ideas. At this point it’s gotta be either bad RAM or bad CPU (or maybe i’ve managed to improperly install CPU cooler like 30 consecutive times). It’s just hard to believe that either the CPU would be DOA or BOTH ram sticks would be defective
-

Yeah I’ve google almost every possible combination of the problem. I think I’m stuck with replacing individual components until it posts.

That Asus rep’s responses are exactly why I don’t buy Asus anymore. Their customer service is absolute crap. I’d say return the board and get one that uses reasonable timings.
-
#9
Based off that OC.net thread it sounds to me like Asus shipped the boards with overly aggressive XMP settings which makes the board excessively picky on RAM. Even better is the fact (again based off that thread) their updated firmware released to fix this issue have been buggy and there’s at least one person in that thread using memory that IS on the QVL and still having the same issue. That Asus rep’s responses are exactly why I don’t buy Asus anymore. Their customer service is absolute crap. I’d say return the board and get one that uses reasonable timings.
Swapped out a different set of DIMMs but same issue. They weren’t QVL certified, but nothing the store sold was. Going to try a new CPU now. If this doesnt work im throwing this off the god damn balcony.

SON OF A BITCH. It was a bad CPU giving me the error code 55. Great job with the error codes, ASUS, very helpful in troubleshooting a bad CPU.
WOW, that’s crazy man. I don’t think i’ve ever had a bad Intel cpu out of the box in all my years of building pc’s. Glad you figured it out. Would have never guessed it could be a cpu.

Yeah, same, man. Would have guessed it was human error WAY before I figured the CPU was DOA.

What cpu cooler do you have?
cooler master hyper evo 212
People have been having trouble with the metal of the screws on the cooler shorting on the motherboard, also being over tight. Others with that same board, getting that same code
I updated the bios and after pressing mem ok buttom, It booted ok. I reset after and I got error 41 and it auto reboot showing directly the bios menu.
The risers on the heatsink all have a plastic coated side, are they facing down on mobo? sometimes the risers can have burrs
No. Im not getting error 41 any more. System boots into the bios menu with error A9 on the mother board is this normal?. What does code A9 means? I dont have an os install yet.

Did you test your Dimms are working OK?
If not, Run HCI Memtest instead or the Google Stress App test in Linux. That will eliminate that possibility.
Go into Bios and set priority to boot from USB, test for 8GB.
Dimms should be tested in slots A2 and B2 as per manual section:1.2.4
Also make sure the Dimms are seated correctly, especially offside to the clip.
Also make sure u are running on updated Bios version.
If nothing works out well, go for RMA your board and also talk with Crucial regarding the issue and if same issue persists on new board then replace with the new Crucial KIT, i hope you are using the Kit in current set-up.

I would like to ask for advice on how to resolve Asus QCode error 55/41 on my Maximus VIII Hero Alpha.
I have two memory sticks of GSkill Trident Z 3200mhz 8GB which when placed in memory slots A1/B1 ( channel A) cause the error and the system doesn’t post. This is the first time I’ve built a computer and am taking it slowly, trying to iron out any problems as soon as they occur. If I place the same memory sticks into slots A2/B2 (channel B) the system posts and goes straight into the BIOS as no OS is installed yet. In the BIOS the amount of memory is correctly shown although I do have to enable XMP to register the correct speed and timings.
I have also tried each memory stick on their own in each slot and again whenever A1/B1 is used the system doesn’t post and the QCode 55 or 41 is shown. When I put them in A2/B2 the system posts without error, so I’m confident that the memory is good and the problem lies solely with channel A.
After reading about this subject on a number of forums I have also checked both the CPU and socket for bent pins, to which I can’t find any. I’ve attached some photos of the CPU and socket for people to have a look at it, just in case I’ve missed something!
I’ve also re-seated the AIO CPU cooler in case it was too tight but that hasn’t made any difference. So, now I’m at a loss as what to try next and I’m reaching out to you guys for help. I’m guessing that if I can’t sort it it will be time to RMA it.
Thanks for reading,
Greg

It should also state that if you position memory in any other two slots it will prevent the board from posting.
The type of memory you have bought should also be checked, in relation to if it is buffered or un buffered memory.
Or if it has Ecc correction.
Some motherboards support the fitting of Ecc type memory or standard buffered or un buffered memory types.
But in order to run them there is a mode option in your bios to enable Ecc type memory or disable it.
If the memory is Ecc type then the option must be enabled in the bios or booting of the system will stop.
If the Ecc option is enabled in the bios and the memory type you have is not Ecc capable you must disable that option or again the board will fail to boot.
It all has to do in what order the memory controler on the motherboard reads each memory slot.
from 1 to 4.
It expects to find memory in the first memory slot to read, if that test fails the it is why the board does not boot or post to bios.
Stokiegreg.
That is why the manual page on memory population states what two slots memory must first be inserted too, as it defines what memory mode the memory should run at.
Single or dual channel memory mode.
It`s not always the case that Dimm A1 and B1 are the default reading order from 1 to 4.
They can be reversed in order such as on your board where A2 and B2 are read first for memory configuration, and initialisation by the bios.

After reading I checked the DIMMS I’d purchased and can confirm that they are non-ecc and unbuffered, matching the supported types as specified in the motherboard manual. Although they don’t appear on the supported memory list the same product but with different timings does. Anyway, to be on the safe side I checked the BIOS but could not find any entries for memory type, so I’m pretty sure you don’t have to set it.
Regarding slot population, the DIMMs should be inserted into A2 and B2 for dual channel support and just A2 for a single DIMM. If I do this then I get QCode 55 or 41. Only by populating B1 and/or B2 does the system post. The memory is then shown at stock speed and I have to enable XMP for the correct speed and timings to be used. After doing this the system restarts and posts fine.
With the memory in B1/B2 pressing the Mem OK button returns successful, repeating it with the DIMMS in A1/A2 or A2/B2 returns an error QCode of 55, 41, 64 or 99.
Do you think the memory slots A1 & A2 are broken? Or should I be looking at another cause — faulty cpu, incorrect voltages?
