STEAM error — Important files are damaged

So to keep everyone up to date this is the situation.

Steam beta client was creating problems for DCS open beta.
We fixed open beta to work correctly with steam beta client.

today steam pushed the steam beta client to normal steam client,
this has created problems for DCS stable version.

Work around currently is to update to DCS open beta.
(the one in the betas tab that says public open beta with no numbers)

Update:
The next open beta patch will be here soon.
This will present a unique situation with our versions on steam,

Stable version ( which is currently open beta) will be stuck between versions until we can update the stable version. This will mean users may not be able to play on the same servers.

We recommend if you are playing online to use the Open beta steam version until the version numbers on stable are matched again in a future update. This should happen once the new open beta has had wider testing.

Thank you for your patience.

Just finished downloading DCS for 3 weeks and the first thing I get is an error saying the bin and dcs.exe files are damaged.

Is this an simple fix or do I have to download it all over again?

level 1

You can run a repair and it should verify and only download what is needed.

level 2

In case that doesn’t work, delete DCS.exe and let the repair run again

level 1

Run a file check and repair as everyone said.

But still, it took you 3 weeks for a fresh install?

level 2

Yes. My connection is extremely slow. In the UK no less.

level 2

Dude this doesn’t work. My game was literally running flawlessly yesterday, I bought the mosquito today and installed it, boom. This error message. What the hell is wrong with these people fucking fix that shit

level 1

I ran a repair and it crashes on start up. Deleted DCS.exe and ran the repair again and it still crashes.

level 2

I had the same issue but I believe mine was self induced by DCS getting too large for my 250GB SSD (only use the other internal drive for pictures and such since it’s an HDD) even though I had most mods on an external 1TB SSD so I moved my saved games folder to External drive (F: for me) and believe I screwed up and moved my user file to F: but like another comment I made I literally had to reset my PC but the errors encountered ended up resetting it back to no OS. Anyway turned out to be a major pain but now I do have everything on my external SSD which isn’t quite as my smaller internal SSD.

How to repair/cleanup or update DCS World?

  • How to update DCS World?
  • Cleanup and repair

How to update DCS World?

Windows Start Menu/Eagle Dynamics. Locate the Update option for the DCS product (version) you wish to update.

Note that you can do both updates and repairs from this location.

The latest DCS World version number and the latest released DCS_updater.exe can be found on the page: DCS World updates

If you found that your DCS_updater.exe is not new, please download the latest one and replace it in the folder ..DCS WorldBin

Cleanup and repair

How to repair DCS World from Start menu:

Windows Start Menu/Eagle Dynamics. Locate the Repair option for the DCS product (version) you wish to repair.

You can also run repair with an options: Check all files (slow) and Search for extra files after repair.

How to cleanup DCS World:

If you need to completely clean your DCS game after modifications, please use cleanup.

It is important to Remove all your user mods if you have any, and backup any changes

Go into your  …Eagle DynamicsDCS World [openbeta]bin folder.

There, hold Left Shift and right click and click «Open Command window here.»

(Windows 10 creators update now uses Powershell, type cmd in Powershell, press enter and then continue)

Then, type the following exactly as printed:

.DCS_updater.exe cleanup

this will delete all non official files

then do a DCS repair

.DCS_updater.exe repair

You can find the youtube tutorial here:
https://youtu.be/x5DImUpk0WU

You can simply use the batch files directly in the root DCS World folder instead of CMD commands

Please download the files DCS_updater_cleanup.bat and DCS_updater_repair.bat
and then use one by one to clean up first, and then repair.

So this is how that happened. I really don’t know how, but I suddenly got installed bunch of programs and got too many errors. I quickly turned off internet and I unistalled all programs. Everything was fine until I tunred on internet. I got message that I need to update my PC. In the corner of my PC some updates were installing. It was weird for me because I turned off updates for my PC. I ignored it. My computer acted so weird so I restarted my PC and I turned off internet again. I saw that my files are all damaged! Some are still alive, but that’s because that «update» didn’t finished to the end. Anyways, I reinstalled win7 on my local disk c which I formatted, but I didn’t formatted local disk d bc there are too many important stuffs. So isn’t this link just to remove files, not to save them?

I am sorry. Going forward, at least take advantage of some free cloud storage from OneDrive, DropBox and Google’s cloud backup to store your stuff in the cloud for safe keeping.

depending on how sensitive your data is it may be best to purchase a USB flash drive or and external hard drive (depending on how much data there would be) and backup any important data on that going forward.

unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to backup any data now since the virus likely would have infected those files as well

Ransomware occurrences are extremely rare if/when confining one’s software downloading activities to reputable/legitimate sites…

If you use the website’s notorious for cracks/hacks/warez/’Office-sold-here -for $1′ you are pretty much begging for ransomware well before lunchtime…

Backups are what you do BEFORE the BadThing happens.

What is your backup situation at home?

What is your backup situation at home? And if you don’t do that, why not? Every single day, I read multiple threads here of «How do I get my stuff back?» or «That drive had 5 years of photos of my kids!!» Be it a dead drive, dropped phone, virus, accidental deletion, formatting the wrong…

Yes, I think I tried to download crack file from one site. But I guess that is a cause of virus. But it was weird for me that when I installed that exe. where is that crack supposed to be, nothing happened, i didn’t saw any viruses installed. Just after maybe 5 hours on my computer were installed bunch of programs and there was bunch of errors.

What, you thought it would be «HI! I’m a virus. I’ll be encrypting all of your stuff over the next hour or two. If you don’t want me, just turn your system off.»

It did it behind the scenes, invisibly.
That’s what they do.

Your disks are not damaged.
The files are simply encrypted. Without the encryption key, you cannot read them. At all.

Yeah! I’m aware of that. But I know it’s over. There’s no going back. But I wanted to ask is my virus out of PC if I formatted disk where is system installed . I reinstalled win7. But on other disk are just personal files. I’m asking this because I am scared to use this computer again ’cause I am still in shock about what happened. And I am totally scared to use it again. Hope you understand what I asked, yeah I know my english is really bad.

The only way to be 100% sure the «virus» is completely gone is a full wipe of ALL drives that were connected during this episode.

They put on ever folder text document on my pc that I need to pay about 400 dollars to save them, but there is no way that I’m gonna do that. I don’t even trust them. So basically the point of this virus is to trick people to give them money. But in the end of day, it’s my fault that I went to the illegal site to find crack for one stupid program. Computer is not for stupid people like me. Lol. Year ago I did the same stupid thing like this, but it wasn’t dangerous like this now. Will I ever learn that it’s dangerous to download cracks from sites that are obvious that they are fake. Btw Sorry for this long paragraph!

Ahm. I am just gonna backup 1% files that are not thankfully encrypted and I’ll format the other disk.
