SUMMARY of Thread
Background:
First seen on an HP Color LJ CP2025, this error was typically seen when printing PDFs larger than 10 pages, especially when printing duplex. It has also been reported when printing from both XP and OSX versions of MS Word
Some models have some sort of defect in the paper pickup roller for paper tray 2. It causes a hesitation in loading the paper, causing it to be slightly out of alignment, to which the printer responds by automatically enters a cleaning cycle. Since the misfeed happens on the first printed side it spits it out without printing side 2 and leaves you with an operator interaction of pressing OK before it continues.
SOLUTIONS:
Use a different paper tray or the manual feed.
Pickup roller replacement may help. (if switching Tray 2’s paper type to a heavy paper type (e.g. «Heavy 111-130g») fixes the issue, this is likelier to be correct) (Part #’s RM1-4840-000CN and RM1-4426-000CN found on http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=CB494A
If all trays have the problem,
These settings need to be changed only in printers using ToolboxFX or EWS utility.
Leave the printer drivers with default settings.
In System Tab and Paper Handling:
Default Paper Size: A4 or Letter
Default Paper Type: Plain
Manual Feed: Off
Tray 1 Size: Any Size
Tray 1 Type: Any Type
Tray 2 Size: A4 or Letter
Tray 2 Type: Heavy 111-130g
Tray 3 Size: A4 or Letter
Tray 3 Type: Heavy 111-130g
In Paper Out Handling:
Select Specify Time and Action.
Paper Out Time: 0 Seconds
Paper Out Action: Override
In System Tab and Print Quality:
Power-On Calibration: 60 Minutes
Calibration Timing: 168 hours
Note: Tray 2 and Tray 3 availability will differ based on Models.
If that doesn’t help,
- Turn off the printer.
- With the printer off, press at the same time the right arrow button (>) and the Cancel button (X)
- With the previous buttons still pressed, turn the printer back on.
- Keep the buttons pressed until the message <Permanent Storage init.> appears on the printer. When you see this message release the cancel and right arrow buttons.
If that doesn’t help,
- Turn the printer off for about 2 minutes
- Reboot
- Go into the LCD menu under SERVICE and go to RESTORE DEFAULTS
- Push OK. Problem may occurs after a hundred pages.
Set Tray 2’s paper type to something specific not «not indicated»
If that doesn’t help,
If that doesn’t help,
If using non-HP toner cartridges, consider switching to an authentic cart.
If that doesn’t help,
Breaking up large PDF’s into smaller documents might help.
On the «Printer Settings» tab (networked version) in the option group,
Print Quality group:
Power-On Calibration: On
Calibration Timing: 168 Hours
click Apply button
Extended Print Modes change options in Optimize group:
Resistration: On
Jam Reduction: On
click Apply button
System Setup group:
Auto continue: On
click Apply button
Note on Universal Printer Driver:
1. If Printing from Windows apps use PCL5
2. If Printing from MS Office — use PCL6 (in order not to lose colors on complex pages/slides)
3. If Printing from Adobe apps (except Acrobat reader which can use PCL5 efficiently) use PS (expect lot of processing in printer with PS driver)

Started off by suddenly just printing in black. Was half way through a print job and the last few pages were only black ink. Tried to send the job again, this time it stopped printing. Would make the noise as if it were printing but then nothing prints. Makes the noise for a very long time. I’ve tried to delete and reinstall the printer with no success. I was able to print a demo sheet from the printer menu itself — prints only in black. If I try to print any other reports from the printer menu it makes the noise and doesn’t print anything. Just keeps spooling for a long time. I’ve cleaned and calibrated and still no luck. All cartridges are fairly new and HP products. I am using Mac Monterey OS. It had been working fine for years.

If it prints black only then it is likely a failure in the alienation system that disengages the color cartridges when printing black to reduce wear and tear. Could be a bad motor, worn component or something stuck in there. Can you post a video of the noise?

Can’t figure out how to post the video but it’s basically the sound it makes when it’s printing except it prints nothing.

If it is the same noise as normal printing a video would not help. Usually when people say making noise they mean, something out of the ordinary.
