Hi DKF,
‘I don’t speak English very well’ is correct.
As to why?
Sometimes, we English understand perfectly the points of grammar but find it difficult to explain.
I believe ‘very well’ is an adverbial clause of the verb ‘to speak’.
‘very good’ is an adjective. So you can have, ‘John is a very good boy who he speaks English very well.’
But not ‘John is a very well boy who speaks English very good.’
‘very well’ and ‘very good’ can also stand alone as responses to a request for someone to do something.
‘Waiter, fetch me a glass of water please.’ ‘Very well, sir’ or ‘Very good, sir.’
However this usage is now regarded as passé and the waiter would almost certainly say, ‘Certainly sir.’ I believe it still exists among the upper classes, when a servant would reply ‘Very good m’lord’ or ‘Very well m’lady’ when instructed to carry out a task.
Hope this helps.

Good and bad are adjectives, which modify nouns, while well and badly are adverbs and should never modify nouns. But when you are talking about the 5 senses (feel, taste, smell, hear, see) you should use the adjective instead of the adverb.

The second part of this may be confusing.
I do not hear good. I hear well. (My ability to hear is functioning well.)
However, we say, «It feels good.» It gives me a good feeling.
The food tastes good. The food has a good taste.
But….My sense of taste works well.

Hi River,
Just a couple of points to add here, using examples.
That feels very good.
I don’t feel very well.
That tastes very good.
I can’t taste it very well.
That smells very good.
I can’t smell it very well.
I can’t hear very well.
My hearing isn’t very good.
I can’t see very well.
My sight isn’t very good.
But the adverb and adjective function still stand.

The Lady often says «Well!» when she reads certain posts in the forums.
Since I know you ‘well’, River, you may call me Maj. Does that rest well with you?

Cuchu — yes good example. I suppose using this example you can say

and (although I admit this is a bit forced)
The ant’s antennae feel well (they are good at feeling the path for the ant).
Similarly —
This song sounds good

Hope these examples help a bit more DKF — by the way, it is «differences» not «differents».

Hi there! Reading this I got a doubt: in the case of bad, its always ‘bad’, right?
Her English is bad. She speaks very bad.
(Her English is good, she speaks vey well)
And this is just for the fun of it, do you know why with bad its only that word? Must be really interesting what’s behind all these (all these?)

Особенности употребления Good и Well
В некоторых правилах английского языка есть исключения и особенности, которые нужно запомнить.
В современном английском можно встретить такой диалог:
— How are you?
— I’m good. Thanks.
С грамматической точки зрения этот ответ неверный, так как good это прилагательное и значит «хороший», а мы хотим ответить «у меня все хорошо». Но для неформальной беседы такая формулировка подойдет. Правильный ответ: I’m well. Но носители языка говорят по-разному:
I’m very well.
— У меня всё супер.
I’m good.
— У меня всё хорошо.
Если вас спрашивают «How are you doing?» — можно ответить так:
- Грамматически верно
- Грамматически неверно, но можно использовать в разговорной речи
I’m doing well. — У меня всё хорошо.
I don’t feel well. — Мне нехорошо, я плохо себя чувствую.
I’m doing good. — У меня всё хорошо.
I don’t feel good. — Мне плохо.
Когда речь идет о здоровье, лучше использовать слово well.
|
I do not feel well today. |
Я себя плохо чувствую сегодня. Мне нездоровится. |
|
You do not look well. |
Ты плохо выглядишь. У тебя нездоровый вид. |
|
I feel well. |
Я чувствую себя хорошо. Я здоров. |
|
Get well! |
Поправляйся! Выздоравливай! |
|
A child looks well. |
У ребенка здоровый вид, он выглядит здоровым. |
|
All is well with my family. |
В моей семье все в порядке. |
Good отлично сочетается со словами: look, smell, be, sound, taste, feel.
|
It smells good. |
Хорошо пахнет. |
|
The food is good. |
Хорошая еда. Вкусная еда. |
|
It sounds good. |
Звучит хорошо. |
|
This lasagne tastes good. |
Лазанья вкусная. |
|
I feel good. |
Я хорошо себя чувствую. У меня всё классно. |
|
You can be good. |
Ты можешь вести себя хорошо. |
|
A child looks good. |
Ребенок хорошо выглядит. |
|
He doesn’t feel good about being cheated. |
Он не чувствует себя обманутым. |
|
Those glasses look good on you. |
Эти очки хорошо смотрятся на тебе. |
Глагол look в значении «выглядеть» можно использовать и с good, и с well. Значения при этом будут разными:
- to look good — выглядеть хорошо (в контексте внешности)
- to look well — выглядеть хорошо (в контексте здоровья)
Tom looks good in this photo. — На этом фото Том выглядит хорошо.
After yesterday party she doesn’t look very well. — После вчерашней вечеринки она выглядит не очень здоровой.
Интересная фраза — That’s all well and good. Так говорят, когда в целом все хорошо, но есть что-то, что волнует, и это нужно прояснить. Например:
- That’s all well and good, but we don’t have enough time. — Это все очень хорошо, но у нас нет времени.
- Yes, that’s all well and good, but we can’t lose control here. — Это все хорошо, но мы не можем потерять контроль над ситуацией.
- Ok, that’s all well and good, but I have one question. — Это всё прекрасно, но у меня есть один вопрос.
