Dishwashers are the kind of appliance that you can ‘set and forget’. Just load them up with dishes, turn them on, and let them work.

Still, it can be very confusing and frustrating when a dishwasher keeps tripping your home’s circuit breaker.

A dishwasher may be tripping your breaker because of a problem with the heating element, loose or short-circuiting electrical connectors, a shorted transorb, a problematic control circuit board, or even a faulty wash motor. These issues could lead to the dishwasher drawing too much current/power, causing the breaker to trip as a way of avoiding anything bad from happening.

In this article, we’re going to explore the possible reasons this problem keeps happening. By narrowing down the cause, you’ll be able to find a solution and resolve the issue much quicker.

Let’s get started.

Useful Ways To Narrow Down The Cause

When troubleshooting your dishwasher to figure out why it keeps tripping the breaker, it’s essential to ask the right troubleshooting questions. Here are a few to get you started.

Is The Dishwasher Plugged Into A GFCI?

Before anything else, check to see if your dishwasher is plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter or GFCI.

The GFCI is also a type of circuit breaker that protects you by tripping whenever it detects an electrical current imbalance.

The difference here is that a GFCI doesn’t serve the whole house. Instead, it’s a wall socket into which you plug an appliance, such as your dishwasher.

Why This Matters

Well, suppose your dishwasher is plugged into a GFCI.

If the problem lies with the dishwasher, then the GFCI will be the one tripping, not the house’s circuit breaker.

That will help you confirm that the problem is localized to the dishwasher.

However, suppose the house’s circuit breaker trips even though your dishwasher is plugged into a GFCI.

In that case, the problem may be elsewhere, and not with the dishwasher.

Does It Trip The Breaker Mid-Cycle?

To narrow down the problem to its source, it’s also crucial to figure out when the tripping actually happens.

Does it happen before, during, or after a dishwashing cycle? Or perhaps, does it happen randomly each time, with no clear pattern?

Why This Matters

You see, each stage of the dishwashing cycle will activate different components within the machine.

So, if the breaker trips during the same stage each time, then it’ll be much easier to know which part is causing the problem.

Why Does My Dishwasher Keep Tripping The Circuit Breaker?

Now, we’re going to look at the dishwasher components that may be causing the circuit breaker to trip.

We’ll explore the heating element, electrical connectors, the transorb, the control board, and lastly, the motor.

Heating Element

What it is: At the bottom of a dishwasher, you’ll find a heating element.

It’s typically in the shape of a horseshoe, with one electrical connector on both ends.

As the name suggests, the only thing this component does is heat up when the time is right.

In the dishwasher, that means the heating element activates to heat up the water during the wash and rinse cycles.

Towards the end of the dishwashing process, it’ll also heat up the air as part of the drying cycle.

Why it fails: A heating element can suffer damage in many different ways. It could’ve been hit by a plate or something else inside the dishwasher.

It could also have suffered a fault causing it to develop bumps or pits somewhere along the surface of the heating element.

Whatever the case may be, a damaged heating element could end up drawing far too much power or even cause a short circuit, causing the breaker to trip.

How to fix: Heating elements aren’t really meant to be fixed. Instead, it’s much easier to replace the damaged heating element entirely.

Start by referring to your user manual or checking online to find the exact heating element compatible with your dishwasher model.

If you decide to replace it yourself, be sure to disconnect all electrical and water supplies to the unit first.

Then, refer to the user manual to locate and access the existing heating element. The tools you’ll need are minimal, such as a small wrench or screwdriver.

Electrical Connectors

What it is: Every component inside your dishwasher has electrical connectors that allow them to form a circuit together.

These connectors help the part receive power so that they can function.

However, they also connect each component to the control board, coordinating and automating their activities throughout the dishwashing cycle.

Why it fails: Electrical connectors can cause problems in a few different ways.

For example, if they weren’t properly attached in the first place, they could simply come loose after many years.

That’s especially true when the connectors are exposed to the vibrations that the dishwasher generates.

Besides that, some of the wires to those connectors could also end up exposed.

When any of these things happen, it could create a short circuit within the dishwasher.

That’ll cause the breaker to trip as a way of preventing anything terrible from happening as a result.

How to fix: The solution to this problem is to inspect all electrical connectors for issues.

Loose connections must be reapplied and tightened, while exposed wires will need to be replaced.

Typically, this job is best left to qualified professionals who have the right skills, knowledge, and experience.

However, if you decide to do it yourself, always remember to disconnect the power and water supplies to the unit before accessing the dishwasher’s insides.

Transient Voltage Suppression Diode (or ‘Transorb’)

What it is: A critical electrical component inside a dishwasher is the transient voltage suppression diode, commonly known as the ‘transorb’ or ‘TVS diode’.

This component has a straightforward function: to protect the appliance from voltage spikes that might cause damage.

Such spikes usually happen in situations like lightning strikes and more.

Why it fails: The problem here happens when the transorb gets shorted for whatever reason. A shorted transorb can cause damage to the control board while simultaneously tripping your home’s circuit breaker.

How to fix: Thankfully, the transorb is a replaceable part.

First, refer to the user manual for any information on finding a compatible transorb for your particular dishwasher model.

Remember: it’s commonly referred to by other names like ‘TVS diode’ or ‘transient voltage suppression diode’.

Once you have your transorb kit, replacing the damaged one will require access to the electrical components inside the dishwasher itself.

That’s something that’s always best left to professionals. But of course, if you decide to replace it yourself, be sure to disconnect the water and power connectors first.

Control Circuit Board

What it is: Most appliances, especially dishwashers, have a component called the control circuit board.

The simplest way to think of it is as the ‘brain’ of the entire machine.

Once you’ve told it to start the dishwashing process through the control panel, the circuit board will then power and coordinate the whole process.

The right components will activate at the correct times to ensure that your dishes are washed and dried, all under the control board’s guidance.

Why it fails: Over time, control boards can experience damage.

Parts of it could’ve burned, or perhaps it may have inadvertently been exposed to too much moisture and heat from within the machine.

A damaged control board could lead to all sorts of unusual things happening, including the tripping of your circuit breaker.

How to fix: Control boards are a very common part to replace. The key is to find the correct one for your dishwasher model in particular.

So, be sure to refer to your user manual or call the manufacturer to identify the correct model.

A skilled technician could replace it for you, but if you’re feeling adventurous, be sure to disconnect the power and water supplies before you go tinkering inside the machine.

The control board is typically located within the dishwasher door but refer to your user manual to be sure.

Faulty Motor

What it is: Dishwashers will have a motor inside which powers the pump.

Doing so will help ensure that the pump has enough power to move water to wherever it needs to be.

Clean water will spray all over the dishwasher’s insides, while dirty water is then pumped out of the dishwasher.

Why it fails: Motors are mechanical in nature, and such parts tend to fail after experiencing plenty of wear and tear.

When that happens, the dishwasher motor could be pulling far more amps than usual.

That can cause problems, especially when other components in the machine, like the heating element, for instance, also start to power on at the same time.

All of that can result in a circuit breaker tripping due to the excessive amount of power that the dishwasher is drawing as a whole.

The breaker trips as a way of preventing anything terrible from happening due to what’s going on inside the dishwasher.

How to fix: Faulty motors need to be replaced. While it’s always best to refer to a professional, you could also replace it as a DIY job.

Just be warned; replacing a dishwasher’s motor is probably one of the most challenging parts to work on.

That’s because you will probably access the motor through the bottom of the dishwasher, requiring more time and effort than replacing most other parts.

As usual, disconnect the power and water supplies before starting. Since you’re accessing the bottom of the machine, you’ll also need to drain out all of the water beforehand.

Trip Indications

Understanding trip codes is an important part of keeping your equipment running smoothly.  Below are some of the more common codes you may come across when using your Control Techniques Unidrive M700 series drive:

Trip Diagnosis
Over Volts DC bus voltage has exceeded the peak level or maximum continuous level for 15 seconds
Trip 2 The Over Volts trip indicates that the DC bus voltage has exceeded the VM_DC_VOLTAGE[MAX] or
VM_DC_VOLTAGE_SET[MAX] for 15 s. The trip threshold varies depending on voltage rating of the drive as shown below

Recommended actions:
• Increase deceleration ramp (Pr 00.004)
• Decrease the braking resistor value (staying above the minimum value)
• Check nominal AC supply level
• Check for supply disturbances which could cause the DC bus to rise
• Check motor insulation using an insulation tester
OI ac OI ac Instantaneous output over current detected
Trip 3 The instantaneous drive output current has exceeded VM_DRIVE_CURRENT[MAX]. This trip cannot be reset until 10 s after the trip was initiated.

Recommended actions:
• Acceleration/deceleration rate is too short
• If seen during auto-tune reduce the voltage boost
• Check for short circuit on the output cabling
• Check integrity of the motor insulation using an insulation tester
• Check feedback device wiring
• Check feedback device mechanical coupling
• Check feedback signals are free from noise
• Is motor cable length within limits for the frame size
• Reduce the values in the speed loop gain parameters — (Pr 03.010, 03.011, 03.012) or (Pr 03.013, 03.014, 03.015)
• Has the phase angle autotune been completed? (RFC-S mode only)
• Reduce the values in current loop gain parameters (RFC-A, RFC-S modes only)
Inductance Inductance measurement out of range or motor saturation not detected
Trip 8 This trip occurs in RFC-S mode when the drive has detected that the motor inductances are not suitable for the operation
being attempted. The trip is either caused because the ratio or difference between Ld and Lq is too small or because the
saturation characteristic of the motor cannot be measured.
If the inductance ratio or difference is too small this is because one of the following conditions is true:
(No-load Lq (05.072)- Ld (05.024)) / Ld (05.024) < 0.1
(No-load Lq (05.072) — Ld (05.024)) < (K / Full Scale Current Kc (11.061))H
where:

If the saturation characteristic of the motor cannot be measured this is because when the flux in the motor is changed the
measured value of Ld does change sufficiently due to saturation to be measured. When half of Rated Current (05.007) is
applied in the d axis of the motor in each direction the inductance must fall change at least (K / (2 x Full Scale Current Kc
(11.061)).
The specific reasons for each of the sub-trips are given in the table below:

Recommended actions for sub-trip 1:
• Ensure that RFC Low Speed Mode (05.064) is set to Non-salient (1), Current (2) or Current No test (3).
Recommended actions for sub-trip 2:
• Ensure that RFC Low Speed Mode (05.064) is set to Non-salient (1), Current (2) or Current No test (3).
Recommended actions for sub-trip 3:
• None. The trip acts as a warning.
Recommended actions for sub-trip 4:
• Stationary autotune is not possible. Perform a minimal movement or rotating autotune.
• Phasing test on starting is not possible. Use a position feedback device with commutation signals or absolute position
Motor Too Hot Output current overload timed out (I2t)
Trip 20 The Motor Too Hot trip indicates a motor thermal overload based on the Rated Current (Pr 05.007) and Motor Thermal
Time Constant (Pr 04.015). Pr 04.019 displays the motor temperature as a percentage of the maximum value. The drive
will trip on Motor Too Hot when Pr 04.019 gets to 100 %.
Recommended actions:
• Ensure the load is not jammed / sticking
• Check the load on the motor has not changed
• If seen during an auto-tune test in RFC-S mode, ensure the motor Rated Current in Pr 05.007 is ≤ Heavy duty current
rating of the drive
• Tune the Rated Speed (Pr 05.008) (RFC-A mode only)
• Check feedback signal for noise
• Ensure the motor rated current is not zero
• This trip can be disabled and current limiting activated on the motor overload by setting thermal protection mode
Pr 04.016 to 1.
OHt Power Power stage over temperature
Trip 22 This trip indicates that a power stage over-temperature has been detected. From the sub-trip ‘xxyzz’, the Thermistor
location which is indicating the over-temperature is identified by ‘zz’.The thermistor numbering is different for a single
module type drive (i.e. no parallel board fitted) and a multi-module type drive (i.e. parallel board fitted with one or more
power modules) as shown below:
Single module type drive:

Multi-module type system:

Note that the power module that has caused the trip cannot be identified except for the braking IGBT temperature
measurement
Recommended actions:
• Check enclosure / drive fans are still functioning correctly
• Force the heatsink fans to run at maximum speed
• Check enclosure ventilation paths
• Check enclosure door filters
• Increase ventilation
• Reduce the drive switching frequency
• Reduce duty cycle
• Increase acceleration / deceleration rates
• Use S ramp (Pr 02.006)
• Reduce motor load
• Check the derating tables and confirm the drive is correctly sized for the application.
• Use a drive with larger current / power rating
An Input 1 Loss Analog input 1 current loss (Unidrive M700 / M701)
Trip 28 An Input 1 Loss trip indicates that a current loss was detected in current mode on Analog input 1 (Terminal 5, 6). In 4-20 mA
and 20-4 mA modes loss of input is detected if the current falls below 3 mA.
Recommended actions:
• Check control wiring is correct
• Check control wiring is undamaged
• Check the Analog Input 1 Mode (07.007)
• Current signal is present and greater than 3 mA
Phase Loss Supply phase loss
Trip 32 The Phase Loss trip indicates that the drive has detected an input phase loss or large supply imbalance. Phase loss can be
detected directly from the supply where the drive has a thyristor base charge system (Frame size 8 and above). If phase
loss is detected using this method the drive trips immediately and the xx part of the sub-trip is set to 01. In all sizes of drive
phase loss is also detected by monitoring the ripple in the DC bus voltage in which case the drive attempts to stop the drive
before tripping unless bit 2 of Action On Trip Detection (10.037) is set to one. When phase loss is detected by monitoring
the ripple in the DC bus voltage the xx part of the sub-trip is zero.

(1) Input phase loss detection can be disabled when the drive required to operate from the DC supply or from a single
phase supply in Input Phase Loss Detection Mode (06.047).
(2) For a parallel power-module system the rectifier number will be one as it is not possible to determine which rectifier has
detected the fault.
This trip does not occur in regen mode.
Recommended actions:
• Check the AC supply voltage balance and level at full load
• Check the DC bus ripple level with an isolated oscilloscope
• Check the output current stability
• Check for mechanical resonance with the load
• Reduce the duty cycle
• Reduce the motor load
• Disable the phase loss detection, set Pr 06.047 to 2.
Out Phase Loss Output phase loss detected
Trip 98 The Out Phase Loss trip indicates that phase loss has been detected at the drive output.

NOTE:
If Pr 05.042 = 1 the physical output phases are reversed, and so sub-trip 3 refers to physical output phase V and sub-trip 2
refers to physical output phase W.
Recommended actions:
• Check motor and drive connections
• To disable the trip set Output Phase Loss Detection Enable (06.059) = 0
OI dc Power module over current detected from IGBT on state voltage monitoring
Trip 109 The OI dc trip indicates that the short circuit protection for the drive output stage has been activated. The table below
shows where the trip has been detected. This trip cannot be reset until 10 s after the trip was initiated.

Recommended actions:
• Disconnect the motor cable at the drive end and check the motor and cable insulation with an insulation tester
• Replace the drive
Configuration The number of power modules installed is different from the modules expected
Trip 111 The Configuration trip indicates that the Number Of Power Modules Detected (11.071) does not match the previous value
stored. The sub-trip value indicates the number of power modules expected.
Recommended actions:
• Ensure that all the power modules are correctly connected
• Ensure all the power modules have powered up correctly
• Ensure that the value in Pr 11.071 is set to the number of power modules connected
• Set Pr 11.035 to 0 to disable the trip if it is not required
This trip is also initiated if the number of external rectifiers connected to each power module is less than the number
defined by Number Of Rectifiers Expected (11.096). If this is the reason for the trip the sub-trip is 10x where x is the number
of external rectifiers that should be connected.
Recommended actions:
• Ensure that all the external rectifiers are connected correctly
• Ensure that the value in Number Of Rectifiers Expected (11.096) is correct

P009B Fuel Pressure Relief Control Circuit / Open

OBD-II DTC Datasheet

Fuel pressure relief control circuit / open

What does this mean?

This Generic Transmission Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) typically applies to all OBD-II vehicles. This may include, but is not limited to, Dodge, Ram, Chevy, Ford, GMC, Saturn, etc. Although generic, specific repair steps may vary depending on the brand / model.

The P009B OBD-II trouble code is one of five possible codes that indicate that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a malfunction and operation in the fuel pressure relief control circuit.

Codes associated with fuel pressure relief device: P009B, P009C, P009D, P009E and P009F.

The purpose of the fuel pressure relief control circuit is to control the amount and pressure of fuel supplied to the engine for proper operation. The PCM monitors the fuel pressure regulator and opens the fuel pressure relief valve to return excess fuel back to the fuel supply system.

P009B is set by the PCM when the fuel pressure relief control circuit is open.

What is the severity of this DTC?

The severity of this code is usually moderate depending on the specific problem.

Example of a fuel pressure relief valve: P009B Fuel Pressure Relief Control Circuit / Open

What are some of the symptoms of the code?

Symptoms of a P009B engine code may include:

  • The engine will not start
  • Poor engine performance
  • Check Engine light is on
  • Fuel dripping from the exhaust pipe
  • Increased fuel consumption

What are some of the possible reasons for the code to appear?

Reasons for this code may include:

  • Defective fuel pump
  • Defective fuel pressure relief valve
  • Fuel pressure regulator malfunction
  • Corroded or damaged connector
  • Faulty or damaged wiring
  • Defective PCM

What are some steps to troubleshoot the P009B?

The first step in troubleshooting any problem is to review the vehicle-specific Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) by year, model, and powerplant. In some cases, this can save you a lot of time in the long run by pointing you in the right direction.

Locate all components related to the fuel pressure relief control circuit. This will include the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure relief valve and PCM in a simplex system. Once these components are found, a thorough visual inspection should be performed to check all associated wiring and connectors for obvious defects such as scratches, scuffs, bare wires, or burn spots.

Fuel pressure tests

The appropriate fuel pressure will vary depending on the specific engine and the configuration of the fuel delivery system. To obtain the correct fuel pressure range and gauge mounting locations for accurate pressure testing, reference must be made to the technical data.

Advanced steps

The additional steps become very vehicle specific and require appropriate advanced equipment to be performed accurately. These procedures require a digital multimeter and vehicle-specific technical reference documents. Voltage requirements depend on the specific year of manufacture, vehicle model and engine.

Checking circuits

Voltage requirements will vary based on the specific engine, fuel pressure relief control circuit configuration, and components included. To obtain the correct voltage range for each component, refer to the technical data.

If this process reveals that there is no power source or ground connection, a continuity check may be required to check the condition of the wiring. Continuity tests are always performed with power disconnected from the circuit, and normal readings should be 0 ohms of resistance unless otherwise specified in the datasheet. Resistance or no continuity indicates faulty wiring or connectors that need to be repaired or replaced.

What is a routine repair?

  • Replacing the fuel pump
  • Replacing the fuel pressure relief valve
  • Replacing the fuel pressure regulator
  • Cleaning connectors from corrosion
  • Repair or replacement of wiring
  • Flashing or replacing PCM

  • Из выхлопной трубы автомобиля идет белый или черный густой дым;
