I’ve used audacity to record sound when its coming out of my headphones many many times. All of a sudden with out having changed any of my settings, I kept getting a » invalid device 9996 error».
Sometimes when I set it to ‘speakers’ in my audio options (that’s my headphones), and right next to it its set to mono, I’ll get an error. That’s because my computer is putting out stereo, and it’s listening for mono, and audacity doesn’t like that at all. I tried checking that, that wasn’t it.
I could also record audio from my headphones on another program called bandicam just fine. So I was sure it wasn’t my sound device internals or something.
I eventually went to my audio devices. Just go to the bottom right and find your audio manager and right click it to bring up all your audio devices. That’s when I noticed the configure button at the bottom. I hit ‘confgure’, and walla! My headphones for some reason were set to 5.1 surround sound. Once I changed it to stereo, it worked perfectly just like before.
I’ve no clue how my headphones got changed to 5.1 surround.

Для решения данной проблемы вам необходимо выполнить следующее:
1. Откройте панель управления (Пуск → Панель управления)
2. Откройте настройки Звука (Оборудование и звук → Звук → Управление звуковыми устройствами)
3. Перейдите во вкладку Запись.
4. Правой кнопкой мыши нажмите по пустой области и выберите «Показать отключенные устройства».
5. Если не появится никаких новых устройств, то настоятельно рекомендую установить или обновить текущие драйвера на вашу звуковую карту.
6. Если новое устройство появилось, то нажмите по нему правой кнопкой мыши и выберите настройки.
7. В строке «Применение устройства» выберите «Использовать это устройство (вкл.)».
8. Нажимайте ОК пока не закроете все окна. Перезапустите программу Audacity.
9. Ошибка должна исчезнуть.

Советы — хрень. У меня нет ни использовать устройство, ни оборудование и звук.

Tried everything without any success. Settings, uninstall, re-install, drivers update etc, etc.
Problem was my privacy settings.
Solution: Windows Settings>Privacy>App permissions-Microphone>Allow access to the microphone on this device>ON and then Allow apps to access your microphone>ON
(even if you don’t need to record from Mic in)
