Hello everyone.Forgive me for the long post (TL
R at the bottom).
I recently have been getting errors on my motherboard AsRock Z77 Extreme4 about memory not being recognized or detected, and I’m wondering if anyone here can help me resolve this issue as no matter how much I search through google the problem can’t be solved.
Ok, I want to start by saying that a few hours ago I turned on my PC and was playing video games, browsing web etc… as I do everyday, no problems appeared or anything weird happening everything was normal. Then I noticed through GPU-Z that my GPU is running at x8 speed on PCIe Gen3 slot instead of x16 and heard it was better to make the GPU run always at x16, I realized it was because my GPU was mounted on a second PCIe 3.0 slot instead of the top one, so I decided to move it there.
Fast forward a few minutes of me putting my GPU at my top PCIe 3.0, and putting all cables back (PSU’s GPU cables + DisplayPort) only to realize my PC won’t turn on and when I look at AsRock’s «Dr.Debug» LED troubleshooter, I see that the error I’m getting is «55, Memory not initialized». I really don’t know why this is happening especially since I NEVER touched my RAM sticks while taking off/putting on my GPU.
It confuses me since seeing the PC was just working normally moments ago and now suddenly it can’t recognize my memory ? To make matters worse, I removed my GPU from the case fully and wanted to try to turn on my PC with only onboard GPU only to get the same error as before.
That’s pretty much it what my problem is , I also want to mention that I tried each stick in each slot separately only to get either «53, Memory not recognized» or «55, Memory not initialized», I’m pretty sure that my memory is fine seeing as how it worked all these years without any issues and just a few moments ago. If anyone faced this problem before help would be appreciated.

Memory might have died (it happens, unfortunately), or perhaps BIOS setting for VCCSA or VCCIO voltage is too low.
If you haven’t yet, do a proper CMOS clear by removing battery, and using the jumper to Clear CMOS. Stick one stick into third slot. THIRD SLOT!!! Try booting with just the one stick in third slot! Magic may happen!
-
#3
Got it.
There’s also a «Clear CMOS» button, should I still do it manually ?
-
#4
Well that’s weird. I just reseted the BIOS and tried again and it seems to work with only 1 RAM stick, and it look like that other one is faulty since it won’t boot with the other one, but what’s weird is that sometimes it boots with the other one and sometimes it doesn’t.

Since there’s room for confusion have you tried both sticks of ram on their own?
Because if they both work on their own and the problem only arises when you’re adding the second stick it could be something CPU side. If it’s only one particular stick that doesn’t work on it’s own and it doesn’t work with the other stick ,then it looks like it’s time to use the wonderful lifetime warrantee that every stick of RAM has
-

Ignore what I just said, now it seems to work fine after cleaning the RAM slots. Thanks for the help again.
-
#7
Apparently, the problem appeared again and was fixed by itself again later
?!
I don’t get it, is the motherboard at fault here ? I tried to connect both 1 and 2 of the RAM sticks back and on other RAM slots, sometimes it didn’t work and sometimes (and right now) it’s working.

Ok, I’ve read in another thread that apparently if the board is flexed a little it can affect the RAM slots. So what I did was put back where the GPU was instead of at the PCIe closer to the CPU and so far it seems that it works.
So far I won’t be touching anything in my case unless I’m replacing the whole MB.
-
#9
I’ve had 2 Asrock Socket 1155 boards have memory detection issues if the CPU cooler was over tightened. As the socket flex’s as you have said. Have you fitted a new cooler or adjusted it recently? Try to loosen off the CPU cooler slightly.

This^, the ASRock Z77 can be a bit of a pain with voltages surly worth trying after checking each stick and what voltages are actually running.

Hi all,
I recently got an asrock extreme 4 z77 mobo , intel 3570k and gskill 4gb x 2 1600MHZ(not dual channel, separate kit but same model, brought them together)
I have update the mobo bios through internet.
There are four ram slots, and they are a1,a2,b1,b2.
In manual its said that a1,b1 — dual channel and a2 — b2 dual channel.
But the problem is when add the ram to these following slots i am getting 55 error(that is memory not install). But the ram works only when i insert them in a1 and a2 slot.
When try them in below configuration, i am getting 55 error
1. a1 , b1
2 b1, b2
3 a2,b2
4, b2,a1
5, a1,a2
6, a1,b2
I just want to know , whether my mobo is faulty. or everything is just fine.

Code 55 is «memory not installed». If you know your memory is good, it is most likely the motherboard at fault.

Thats what i were thinking. The ram is good. It works on slot a1 and a2.

Will try keep only one ram. And will try all slots and report here

Seems like mobo is problem
I have tried with single ram, in all slots
only slots a1, and a2 working
slots b2,b1 not working
-

I have the G-Skill Snipers (believe they might be identical with shorter heat spreaders) and this same board. So yours should work just fine.
Mine had the same error and it was the boards fault, I had a single bent CPU socket pin. Symptoms were odd, single stick would work in 3 of the memory channels, two sticks would produce the error every time.
So in all, the memory should work fine. I experienced this issue, but it was likely a one off problem.

Good find. Since this motherboard is not quite the ATX standard I would suggest before RMA to try to take the mobo down and re-mount it in the case taking particular care of the correct use of the standoffs. The mobo might be bent or when pushed/forced, the 24pin power cord which is close to to those slots might have caused some damage. Of course a clear CMOS also might be tried. Then RMA.

inspect the socket for bent pins asrock seems to have a issue with there memory slots not working due to bad sockets
-
#12
If a channel as a whole isn’t working and there are no physical deformities you can see on the motherboard it could be a channel on the IMC on your processor, but I would guess that it is the motherboard before that.

Problem solved
Hey you guys are right. The problem was with the mobo socket,
I took my proccy out of mobo today. To check the cpu socket. What i found was a bent pin.
I carefully made the pin straight. Now all four ram slots working fine.
No i am running my rams on slot a1 and b1
.
Thanks a lot guys.
For everyone who planing to buy Asrock z77 Extreme :
I searched online everyhwere. Many reporting that mobo having faulty ram slots. So beware.

Boom goes the dynamite.
Glad to hear that it was only a bent pin. I remember when I took out my cooler off of the motherboard with my Phenom II 940, I ended up ripping the CPU out of the socket (another reason why I love LGA and Intel’s retaining bracket (SB-E has two brackets that lock together on each side!)) and I ended up bending about 30 pins on it (!!). Took me an hour but I straightened them all out.
The «Thanks» button is like reputation on other sites. It’s just based on the particular post.
Let that baby fly and have fun.

I have seen quiet a few complaints of asrock boards with dimm slot issues because of faulty sockets seems to be a common issue with asrock boards shame because there dam good boards at a affordable price. then again hard to say how many of the complaints are a factory defect and what ones are user error
always install the CPU strait down never tip it in or slide in it always set it in strait and square [<^>]

»My current idea on what may has happened is that the motherboard was jostled during shipping, because it just came in the retail box with two styrofoam pieces over and under it inside of a larger box.»
thing is ws it new or open box like the guy bought it new and it did not work or failed and he repackaged it back in the factory box and taped it up ??? see ??? then you go back to him and he now claims it damaged by you cause it was working fine when he shipped it ??? then the cpu did the guy burn it up when he goofed his overclocking of it and passed it on to you as good ??? what recourse have you got ?
unless you picked it all up for $50 bucks and no big deal on being out that little bit of cash ??????
I don’t know man , tough call , and I guess all part of buying as you did , high risk

then if its now detected go and set its xmp
then you may have got a bad stick or its not a compatible memory [rare but happens ]
also be sure its seating in the slot properly some time it can take 2 or 3 tries for it to lock in and make proper contact in the slots

I don’t know if I can even make it into the bios, as it restarts after the error shows up and I assume it would just loop indefinitely if left like that. I will try to clear cmos and see what happens.

Mine’s working perfectly.
I only had to redo my overclock settings. (3570K)

I got the stick from /r/hardwareswap for $10. It was probably part of some kit but it is 4gb of 1866mhz ddr3. The mobo was also bought used from ebay. Really the only brand new parts were the PSU, cooler, and case. I finished building it yesterday.

I guess if nothing else is working out may need to remove the cpu to see if you incurred any bent pins when you installed it ??
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2108666/cpu-socket-pins-bent-missing-intel.html
http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/728608-Bent-Pins-in-LGA1155-Socket
Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been sick with Strep Throat. I tried clearing cmos, but it didn’t do anything (Don’t know if I did it right, I plugged in PSU, turned PSU on, then pressed clear cmos). The model number for the ram is CMZ8GX3MA1866C9B.

»Don’t know if I did it right, I plugged in PSU, turned PSU on, then pressed clear cmos»
should be all covered in your boards manual
pages 35 — 41
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/438973/Asrock-Z77-Extreme4.html?page=43#manual
see on page 43 it shows that dr debug code 55 is memory NOT INSTALLED . be sure your inserting it in there slots correctly and its firmly locked in place [page 20 ]
then I googled that CMZ8GX3MA1866C9B. you must be missing a number in that part number should be a 1 [single stick — 2 [ 2 stick kit] -4 [4 stick»] or 8 . CMZ4GX3M »2» A1600C9B = a 2 stick kit for example
so I don’t know what to tell you on that deal
I’d check at corsairs site and see if its real corsair memory or some kind of bootleg
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/memory
if it still fails you back on the memory you were using and these sticks got a problem and I guess try another 1866 kit if needed ?
did you buy this memory new ?? cause then 1866 memory from corsair seems only to come in kits not sold a s single ?? [best I see form them ]

Yes, I forgot. The missing number is a 2.
I just built this PC on Monday. The CPU is a 2500k. I bought a new stick of ram (1600mhz 8gb) but that still gives me the error as well.

I have reseated the CPU and cooler — no bent pins to my eyes. The motherboard is pretty straight, although it bent upwards in the bottom left area during installation. Could that have interfered with the slots?
As for where I got all of the parts, I got the CPU from /r/hardwareswap, the motherboard from ebay as mentioned. Everything but the PSU, Case, and Cooler were bought used. All sellers have had positive feedback. The motherboard seller has 195 stars on ebay and the CPU seller has 65 confirmed sales on Reddit.
My current idea on what may has happened is that the motherboard was jostled during shipping, because it just came in the retail box with two styrofoam pieces over and under it inside of a larger box.

thing is ws it new or open box like the guy bought it new and it did not work or failed and he repackaged it back in the factory box and taped it up ??? see ??? then you go back to him and he now claims it damaged by you cause it was working fine when he shipped it ??? then the cpu did the guy burn it up when he goofed his overclocking of it and passed it on to you as good ??? what recourse have you got ?
unless you picked it all up for $50 bucks and no big deal on being out that little bit of cash ??????
I don’t know man , tough call , and I guess all part of buying as you did , high risk
