I cannot get DWM, and thus Aero, to function any longer on my mostly 7 year old system. Windows 7 Professional 64 bit has been installed since early 2010 and I had not encountered any problems up until about two weeks ago, when I loaded Windows to find that
Aero and its ancillary components no longer functioned. I have uninstalled Window Blinds, made registry edits to ‘force’ Aero, performed clean start-ups, updated the GPU drivers, run the troubleshooter for transparency and Aero effects (it couldn’t detect
an issue), tried logging on as another user, uninstalled Fast Picture Viewer’s Codec Pack, re-run the Windows Experience Index, consulted augers, and otherwise driven myself mad trying to figure out what happened. I refreshed my Windows Experience Index and
it returned the same numbers as before the manifestation of this problem — 7.3 for 3D and gaming/business and 7.3 for Aero. I upgraded the video card in 2009 and it hasn’t caused any problems, nor is it overclocked. I did accidentally log in to my backup Windows
installation on my primary U320 SCSI array instead of my main harddrive, just before this happened, but Aero still works in that install, and it hasn’t been used since the 23rd of last September. Unfortunately, I hadn’t remembered to set up any recovery or
backup options since changing to the new drive, so I couldn’t try to ‘roll back’ to an earlier, known-good configuration. The Fix It program I just downloaded from MicroSoft reports that my video card doesn’t support Aero, even though the built-in troubleshooter
says it does. The card is an eVGA Nvidia GeForce FX 285 FTW with 1GB RAM. All my programs seem to function normally, except the game Borderlands 2, which will report that it is preparing to load, then start 2 or 3 processes which immediately terminate. I don’t
